I meant CV181-Tll. No,the filaments did not light up at all. I bought the tubes from a stand-up audiophile. I have to believe they're just not compatible with the Cary. BTW, I've had other preamp tubes that did not visibly illuminate and they were good tubes.
Follow Ups:
The problem with Psvane is quality control. Try some good NOS in your Cary. They will last long and sound great.
double dittorissima :)
Appreciate all the feedback. Taking the tubes to be tested today and will get back.
Either I bungled the tube placement or they just won't work in this pre. The tubes tested fine. Anybody ever try a tube adapter/socket saver as a fix?
Have you tried tensioning the sockets? You mentioned they were difficult to get in so maybe you stretched the sockets? It is normally part of tube amp maintenance. Jim McShane has a nice list of "to do" items that he reposted not long ago, I recall.
Comparing the pins on the PSVANE with my Sylvania 6N7's, the pins are farther apart from each other on the Chinese tube. That may be the problem. Perhaps the spacing on the earlier iteration of this tube or the Black Treasures was closer. I know that forms of this tube were used successfully in the Cary SLP-05 and the 98 as discussed on the Asylum and other blogs. That's why I bought them.
The issue is likely the recessed sockets in the pre. I'm using them in one of Dennis Had's Inspire amp and preamp. Excellent tubes IMHO. I have plenty of NOS that are gathering dust. You may want to call Cary service.

I agree with Mike. Perhaps there is an issue with the sockets and certain tubes?
