Harbeths are gone and I now have Omega Super Alnico High Output monitors.
Follow Ups:
The GL will still likely be better to your ears based on your speakers and what you listen too. The GL's are more extended and a little more dynamic than the TS.
Dennis designed the PSE amp to allow mixing power tubes so you sonic nirvana may be two pairs of different tubes. Endless experimenting w/o breaking the bank.
I'd like any comments or observations on the best sounding 6SL7's and 6SN7's.
BB, what 6SN7's & 6SL7's do you presently have?
That is the subject of an entire thread. I think it has been discussed at length and detail.
New or old stock?
If new I have only second hand knowledge but I think the Shuguang Treasure is well liked.
Old stock several of the Sylvania GTs but most would agree its the 'W' tall bottle metal base. Tung Sol round plates are cherished by many as the best. Then a myriad of choices NU, RCA, Raytheon etc. There are Brimar tubes made for the American market.
Imports like the famous Mullard ECC32, and the ECC33 as well as the British Brimar CV1988s,- the ECC34 and ECC35 may work for you.
That's it in a nutshell.
Howdy Mechans,
I've had all the revered 6SN7's but at current prices, like $400+ for a pair of TS RP's, the Shuguang CV 181's are not that expensive. Due to a lot of internet noise and the initial insane pricing I passed. Last year I bought a pair of the Psvane UK CV-181's and liked them. Then came the CV 181-Z, then CV 181-T, CV 181-T II and Shuguang WE 6SN7. All of these are very good tubes. The issue I see is that there is not much information about them. Like how they were voiced etc. I have no idea why they decided to call them CV-181's or WE 6SN7. WE never made a 6SN7. Since I accumulated these I have not used an old production 6SN7. YMMV etc.
I have way too much invested in the old tubes to start experimenting with the pricier new products.
I bought most of them a years ago before prices got too crazy. When my many multiple lifetime supply of these are used up, I might start playing around with the new Chinese products. They aren't cheap by any means. Are they that much better than my collection of Ws, Bad Boys, TSs, NUs, RCAs, etc....?
I am afraid to sell them, prices I afraid they won't realize anywhere near to what I paid for them. I have seen listings for good but common tubes like the Raytheons not selling at $15- !
