Interesting, the RT 12AU7s on ebay are short plate.
Most but not all. Check out dan.ams tubes, those are the exact tubes
I bought, just not from him.
I am th very fond of the Amperex Heerlen production tubes from the late 1950s through the early 70s. As usual there are variants. The long plate large halo getters are most desirable according to the cognoscenti, but I like them all, especially 7316s.
The non 7316s are fine, I see what I think are counterfeit 7316s to charge a lot anyway. Check for the Heerlen code right triangle.
I was thinking about adding a sentence or two about your budget for these tubes. The 7316s carry a pretty hefty premium these days. I have seen private sellers offer them for much less, but they aren't always tested etc.
Good Luck hunting
PS I am not selling any my 7316s, despite having a multiple lifetime supply.
the french RT ECC82 sounds great but performs an extreme distictive midrange. might be too much for some ears...
"How the fuck did our oil come under their sand?"
I also favor the 50's - early 60's Heerlen tubes. I presently use
E88CC's and in the past used 12ax7's. I have never heard one that I
didn't like and some are/were stunning in my equipment.
I didn't want to "break the bank" on a preamp that I may not
purchase. If I do end up making the switch, after breaking in and
assessing it, then certainly I'd like to hear what a pair of Amperex
LP with tilted foil getters sound like, I had the same tube in a CAL
Sigma (12ax7) and it was amazing. As the prices for a known good pair
of 7316's with d getters approaches what a pair of 7L3 pinched waist
E88CC's are then that would be in the plans but down the road. Many
thanks for your input.
Happy listening, Wood
