but, the $$$ are almost the $$$ of NOS. But, the tone is more "romantic" and less clinical than a lot of new issued Russian made 12AX7 tubes.
Follow Ups:
...I have had a pair in my Pilot 402 receiver for over two years with no issues. I also highly recommend the Psvane 12au7 T-II. I have these as drivers in my Vac monoblocs. Haven't found anything better, new or NOS.
Okay. So it looks like I have my answer. When I am ready to try something new the Psvanes it will be. Looks like they even come in both gain factors like my amp uses, 12ax7 and 12au7 Maybe in the past I was just unlucky or they have worked out their quality issues.
I agree with FenderLover, I use PSVANE 12AX7-II in my phono stage and have tried all other new production tubes.
Darn good sounding tubes.
Oh yeah. Now that I see the picture I remember those.(PSVANE) They did sound great.I purchased a pair of those and within 6 months I started to get a high pitched squeal from one channel. The issue followed the tube. Replaced it and a month later the other one become severely microphonic. Decided to stop throwing good money after bad and put vintage tubes back in. They worked fine until I sold the amp several years later.
People are saying good things about the Sovtek 12ax7lps and they are dirt cheap. Not really seeing a good cheap current production 12au7.
The only role I will ever use a 12AU7 in, is as a follower. In such use any to spec 12AU7 should be fine. 100% local feedback doesn't hurt in achieving that.
For gain duties? Unless you have serious heater current limits in the PSU of pre-amp or power amp, you should consider a 12BX7, at least. Other possibilities require a rewire as well. All would give far lower distortion and lower output impedance. ECC99, and 6CG7, 6FQ7 ....
