In Reply to: RE: Any Current Production 12xx7 Tubes Worth Buying Yet? posted by Eli Duttman on March 27, 2017 at 11:41:39
Eli
The JJ octal signal tubes are fine I believe however, the output tubes sold in the US were another story.I talked to Tomas JJ about eight years ago about the problems of misplaced flashing, crooked bottles, tubes not holding bias, and even arcing and he wasn't aware of the problem.I think they solved a lot of their issues as McIntosh does use the JJ KT88 branded Mcintosh in the Mc275.

Follow Ups:
...Interesting. A friend has a recent Mac tube amp (not 275) and it came with Russian KT88s branded Mac. Look a whole lot like the gold lion reissues.
"
Notice the narrowing top of the tubes. JJ is the only one that does that.
The only thing I can gather is the fact that MAC wanted to use their own label and Mike Matthews couldn't or wouldn't strike a deal to do that. The originals all use Genelex labeled KT88s so it makes no sense but to each their own.

...bet Mac gets tubes from whomever meets their specs at the best price and will change suppliers as market conditions and product quality dictate. In this case, Mac must be able to source from JJ on their terms and not JJ's as Eli mentions.
You can bank on McIntosh getting creme de la creme stock, along with credit for rejects.
Feedback from Europe is more favorable to JJ than that from North America. It's not inconceivable that we get "floor sweepings", not prime stock.
I don't trust JJ's Octal production and will not change my view until product of consistent quality shows up here.

Yes,and this is why Tomas was clueless as to what was going on at the time and the only thing we could think of was,the North American distributor was buying black market items somehow and you know yourself that parts of Eastern Europe don't regulate or police things as they should. There is a lot of corruption after the war in the Chezck Republic.

JJ is made in slovakia. And there has been no war there since WW2.
Tjeckia and Slovakia separated peacefully in the 90 and has no
problems with each other. Just to get facts right.
You are right. I was thinking of Yugoslavia, My bad.
