I just bought a quad of Mullard KT88 ( with 24hr burn in ) & put them in my QS Silver 90's yesterday. I was wondering whether I could use (since I own a few sets ) 6550's, but after some research found out why I shouldn't. I just wanted to try a different brand...after trying my Valve Art KT88's which sounded kind of dry. I also have some EH KT88 as well as some Psvane KT88. The Mullard's have a nice full sound with good bass & tonal balance. The Psvane are now my #2 KT88 with pretty good sound as well. Also I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the EH 12BH7's with gold pins. They look nice, but I'm not sure if they they'll make any sonic difference, & IME EH signal tube's tend to be kind of dry.

You find the reissue Mullard better than the Psvane KT88. What Psvane KT88 are you referring to?
Not calling you out or doubting your ears just curious. In my amp the Psvane KT-88 TII betters the Shuguang Treasure Z, the stock "good" Shuguang and is slightly better or different than the great reissue Gold Lion. It's equal or better than the test new quad of vintage GEC i own as well but that is in my amp not your gear. It's good to know we have choices today!
AFAIK it's just the normal Psvane KT-88 with the silver label that say "For Hi-Fi". Mind you I didn't do a head to head comparison & these are just my first initial impressions. The Psvane KT-88 are (IMO)a very good tube & "just about as good as the Mullard KT88!).
I've outgrown this tube. My favorite (Non-DHT, non-IDHT tubes) are 6 or 12V6 and KT66.
...Do you have any experience with KT77 vs. KT66? My Dennis Had Inspire amp can run either. I really dig the Groove Tube 6L6 tubes too for their clarity and airiness but bass is a little dry,
Thanks!
I've tried every tube type that my Cronus Magnum can take. I much prefer the KT66 over the KT77, which was my least favorite tube type for that amp. YMMV.
I have never had an amp that can play both. In the Rogue Atlas/Cronus the KT77 were a lot better sounding to me than EL34. I can only compare KT88/6550A with KT66 in a PP amp I own.
I've tried the regular (non-gold) EH 12BH7A's in my amp and found them to be OK but bettered by both NOS RCA's and Sylvanias that can still be found for about the same amount of money. I like the RCA's best in my amp, but yours may be different. Not sure how the EH Gold version differs from the standard -- if it's just the gold plating on the pins, there isn't going to be much of a sonic difference in that application. If there's more to it than that, they might be worth a try.

I use them in my VAC Phi 200, and they offer nice richness without going overboard.
I agree. Using them in a Dennis Had Inspire amp.
