While these models are interchangeable in many amps, I've read there are basic differences so they are not identical.
Looking through some spares I found an example that confused me, possibly pulled from an old ST-70 some years ago. They are Raytheon International, made in Japan, and labeled 6CA7/EL 34. Obviously I don't know a great deal about tubes but I question why it would be labeled as both. It looks like other EL34s I have with the more slender bottle than the 6CA7.
Any comments about this?

Follow Ups:
Per the RC-30
RCA Receiving Tube Manual -
they are identical.
Power Pentode.
Happy Listening
having had the two types in hand it is quite easy to call RCA completely wrong on this. one beam tube, one 3-grid pentode.
cheers,

Friend, I would not hurt thee for the world...but thou art standing where I am about to shoot.
Douglas, appreciate your follow up.
I've read enough posts here to believe 6bq5 is knowledgable, but I tended to trust the comments from the Manley tech about their difference.

Some (especially those made to sell in the US have both designations.
You are correct that the big bottle 6CA7 is a beam power tube, whereas the skinny bottle EL34 is a true pentode, yet they can interchange in some a
amps.
I have found that the large bottle 6CA7 needs more negative grid voltage to attain the same plate current.
Also, the 6CA7 seems to hold up better in some amps that run high plate voltage (> 500V). I assume this is because of the larger internal structure with more space between elememts inside.

I've been told the 6CA7 is a beam power tetrode while the EL34 is a true pentode. So my question is can those and a tube labeled 6CA7/EL34 be mixed in an amp which has individual bias for each tube?

I have tube monobloc amps from Consonance Opera the Cyber 800s, which came with 'fat' bottle Electro Harmonix 6CA7s. These amps have a sound that is stupendous with 2 pairs of the 6CA7s in each mono bloc. That sound is greatly diminished when using EL34s or E34Ls etc.. The difference is not subtle. So I say they are not the same in every application, despite being compatible and theoretically interchangeable.
Prolly to indicate that this tube CAN be used in units that have either EL34 or 6CA7 as OEM tubes.
I have a bunch of GE 7581A that are labeled KT-66/7581A.
The EL34 was a European-designed tube.
I think the 6CA7 was the American designation for it?
I have a pair of old Hitachi (Japan) gray plate 6CA7 tubes though?
Steve
el34 was invented by mullard :a great commercial success
Contrasting europesn market ,Sylvania inevented 6ca7 ,a tube
half way between 6l6 and 6550,direct plug in for el 34 .
Different tubes ,same socket.
The best commercial american tube ,in my opinion ,was 7591/7868:
great sounding and original american vacuum tube.
Both mullard el34 and sylvania6ca7 are magnificient sounding
valves of the golden era .
have a flock Toshiba 6GB8 tubes - those seem to be the strangest 6CA7/EL34 clones. right?
