Iam in the process of converting my Hagerman Cornet 2 phono stage to the "octal hybrid" version. Which uses a 6SN7 in the cathode follower position (instead of a 12AU7) and a few resistor changes.
Any recommendations on a 6SN7 for this application?
thanks

CF is the one topology where a 12AU7 won't muddy the sound. It's not worth changing it out for that use.

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
For unity gain CF, I hate to say it probably makes no difference, but probably not a lot of difference. My pre is a CF design and changes in the CF tubes yield the smallest difference in sound of any of the other tubes. A good testing Sylvania is probably as good as any and better than most.
I have heard only minor differences from tube rolling in a 12AU7 "reactor" (choke loaded) CF and these may be illusory. I'm still playing around, but in the main current production and some fairly well-thought of vintage US tubes from the 50s and 60s don't really make a difference in this circuit.
The "best" way to get Sylvania NOS at "reasonable" cost is using the Loctal 7N7. Regardless of branding, Loctal base tubes are the product of Sylvania's Emporium, PA, plant.
BTW, the Loctal equivalent of the 6SL7 is the 7F7. Loctal base tubes, which were intended for mobile service, are less vibration sensitive than the electrically equivalent Octal types.
In current production, New Sensor's "reissue" TungSol is a solid performing 6SN7 variant.

What's the story on the 7AF7? Heard it can also sub for the 6sn7.
If you do get anything from rolling 6SN7s in this circuit, then Sylvania's old stock tubes are a good tube to try. Since you prolly don't want to spend a lot you might want to try the green label GTBs. They have a relatively rich mellow tone. If you want a quicker tube with more precise treble consider the WGTs or if saving money there too then the WGTAs. The older you get the better in some peoples estimation including my own. If you can try the GTs with the Bottom getters made in the 40s and 50s including the military version VT-231. Some of the very best of the Sylvanias 6SN7s are the Military WWII tube the 'W' . A short bottle of that version can be found for as little as $50 but they go up from there to the tall metal base. The price of those you ask ? The stock answer= what someone will pay for one the day you ask.
