Yes, a computer tube version of 12AU7. They had special cathode processing to avoid "cathode poisoning". In logic circuits, the tubes might spend a lot of time in a non-conducting cut-off situation. Apparently, that can cause emission loss pretty easily with typical cathodes.
I happen to like 5963 very much for audio, but I've never tried the RCA. I have some CBS and Sylvania that are very nice.
Really not knowing about that information I would not be surprised if this were the case.
It's funny you said this. Because I was thinking that it actually sounds like this tube was holding back. I don't like to put to much verbiage to how something sounds. Either yes I liked it or no I did not.
I used some in place of a 12AU7 and found them empty sounding. They had no body just an echo like sound, with extreme treble and bass being thinly represented and everything else missing entirely.
I think the amp must make a really important difference for this tube but anyplace I tried them (many years ago,) sounded awful. Could just be a bad tube and very very amp specific. Not sure if I even still own one or two??
I liked the RCA 5963 very much, but I like the GE 5963 even more. Better detailed imaging, more forward, clearer highs (and lows). I just bought the Sylvania Gold Pin 5963s -- anybody know how they compare?
