A highly rated Audiogoner sold me what are supposed to be a pair of Telefunken 12au7 smooth plate tubes. What actually arrived were tubes labeled "Mazda BelVu 12au7 ECC82." They do have what appears to be a diamond engraved on bottoms, although it is hard to see. He insists these really are Telefunken - made 12au7 smooth plates. I do not know enough to accept or not. I cannot find anything on-line confirming his representations.
What say the the tube experts?
Follow Ups:
Whether they are TFK or Mazda (French) made --- both are excellent tubes. In some apps, I like the French tubes better.
I agree the French ones with the slit in the plates are great as well, and can be found quite cheap at times because of their relatively low profile compared to TFKs
Here are some ecc82 smooth plates with the <> on the bottom that I found. These are genuine TFK (Mazda was a rebrander of tubes. They had no own manufactoring facility, so they bought tubes from Thomson, RT, Telefunken and later also Brimar and put the Mazda branding on it).
The 4th tube is also a TFK, but the last three are EI, made in Yuguslavia with TFK machines. If you look on the photo, you can see a clear difference between the plates of tube 4 and 5 (the location of the holes in the plates is different)
Bottoms:
Thanks, BB. My tubes are the 2d from the left in the photo you so kindly provided.
My faith in humanity is (partially) restored!
Thanks also to Fender. Will report back on whether it satisfies more than my current (no pun intended) Amperes Bugle Boys, which have fantastic detail and realism but in my VTL 7.5 iii pre sometimes sound a bit too "bold."
Neal
Very good chance that they are genuine TFK. I have a number of them found in old piles of tubes, all with the <> on the bottom. All good, balanced tubes.
You have photos of tubes?
I am going to post photos in the next few days. best way to tell. Thanks, F-L.
