Fellow inmates...Time for new tubes for my Audio research PH3 (not SE) phono preamp. I'm going NOS this time, but after spending the last 2 days researching I'm not sure if I should go the Amperex, Siemens or Telefunken route. Would like to keep it under $500.
Any suggestions?
VPI Aries MK1 with Classic 3 arm
ARC PH3
McIntosh C22 preamp (original but caps updated etc)
McIntosh MC225
Silverline Panatella II speakersThanks in advance!

I like the Amperex Bugleboy 6922 with gold pins. Also RCA labeled Siemens 6922 gold pin (1961-1963 era).
RCA never manufactured a 6922 gold pin tube. These Siemens 6922 are rumored to use the Cca .028 diameter grid structure.
"I like the Amperex Bugleboy 6922 with gold pins."Those are actually tubes sourced from China and marketed by Richardson Electric who now own the rights to the Amperex and Bugle Boy brand names and logos. They even reproduce the yellow and green Amperex tube boxes we all know so well!
When Amperex was still alive, they never ever made a 6922 Bugle Boy. Furthermore, they never made a 6DJ8 Bugle Boy with gold pins. It came with standard steel pins only.

You did say ARC. Perhaps the only safe option is the Russian 6H23П-EB (6n23p-ev). The ElectroHarmonix (EH) 6922 is 6H23П-EB.
Contact AA sponsor Jim McShane to make sure you buy a truly suitable tube set. It is no good buying tubes with great sonics and spending big $ in the process, if the tubes fail quickly.

Okay, my 2¢ worth ... I've experienced bunches and bunches of different tubes of that type in the phono section of my old Counterpoint 3k. My all around favorite was the Tele 6922. It was the most balanced and tonally correct tube I tried. Second favorite was the Siemens 7308. Third favorite was garden variety Bugle Boy 6DJ8. The Tele's are the best of all worlds. Very nearly as extended on both ends as the Siemens, but with more flesh on the mid-range bones like Amperex. I wish you the best of luck finding any of those you or I mentioned that are quiet enough for phono use. Be prepared to fork over lots of cash when you do find them.
Thanks so much for the advice, I ended up pulling the trigger on some 60's Telefunken E88CC / 6922's. I'll post a follow-up once they've been broken in.

You are entirely welcome. I only hope you enjoy them as much I've enjoyed mine.
