Hey Jim, I tried emailing twice and it bounced back????
I'm looking for output tubes for my Sherwood S-5000. These are for Christmas, so no rush. But I'm either looking for good NOS 7189's or anything you suggest. Mike Samra rebuilt this baby and it really deserves great tubes.
I would also like to consider getting a complete backup set. It uses 7199 drivers, has a RCA GZ34 rectifier and three black plate ribbed telefunks in the preamp linestage. I really do not use the phono section.
Thanks
Charles

Hi Charles,
I have no idea why your emails bounced, I'm receiving emails just fine at this point. Sorry!!
A couple notes... first the only currently available 7189 is the EL84M that is branded Sovtek. It is the current version of the 6P14P-EB - it's an excellent choice, and is readily available in matched quads which you need. NOS is pretty much unobtanium, especially if you need PROPERLY matched sets.
Second, the "RCA" GZ34 is not really an RCA - IIRC RCA did not make a GZ34, so I suspect it is a Sylvania - which is a fine tube. If you want a spare, the Genalex U77 reissues are really good, and very reliable. IMHO there is no need to overpay for scarce Mullard/Amperex stuff anymore. I may have a single Sylvania 5AR4/GZ34 around though, drop me a note if you like.
Third, I have only a couple single 7199s, so I'm no help there, sorry. Eli's post is spot on BTW.
I hope this is some help anyway. I just got back from my road trip late last night so I'm shot today, I'll be more helpful after a bit of recovery time!
Exactly!

I'll try are redo an email from your site.
I hope you are recovering well. I'm sorry to hear that you are under the weather.

I'm not - I'm feeling fine! I was just out of town for a week and had a 6 hour drive home Friday night after working all day. Tired? YES!! But otherwise fine - thanks for your kind thoughts in any case though. Also, I got your last email - no problem, I'll reply tomorrow.

"The 7199 is a PROBLEM, as it has gone the way of the Dodo. Beg, borrow, or steal some 6GH8s and either buy adapters or rewire the sockets. Parts value changes are not needed. Act quickly, as all the suitable pentode/triode types are out of production and supplies are dwindling. We can only hope New Sensor addresses this issue. "
Indeed, the 7199 is a problem, but not a huge one. They're fetching $50 a piece at the moment, which sucks, but considering how long they last in this amp, is not that big a deal. I've never liked the results fitting in a 6GH8 in this amp. They sound weird (sorry for the loose terminology) and they don't last as long as a 7199. I'm sure that varies from amp to amp, but on the S-5000, I really did not like the resulting sound. I also suspect that a lot of 6GH8s were made to looser tolerances than the 7199. When I go through old used tubes with my tester, 6GH8 are often all over the map, they test weak (especially the pentode section), and they drift while in use especially in tuner circuits. When I find old 7199s, they just about always test fine.
Your mileage may vary.
Jim is on the road, this week, earning a living. Try again, this coming Tuesday.
As for O/P tubes, "the only game in town" is the Russian 6П14П-EB (6p14p-ev), AKA EL84M. Fortunately, the Russian variant is tough and it has decent sonics. Jim will easily fill the requirement.

Listen to or not, you need tubes in the phono "holes". Crappy tubes are fine , in the placeholder role.

Hi,
I'm not Jim, but I can offer guidance on a couple of those points.
First off, the 7189s are really hard to find, the Russian mil equivalent works well (6p14p I think). Old stock Ei 7189 are just great, and were even made using the old Amperex equipment. Don't use a 6BQ5/EL84, the S-5000 runs these tubes hard - 425v and 20ma current!
Telefunkens ALWAYS sound best in these amps for the 12AX7s for some reason. If you don't use the phono section, you can put cheapos in there and save the Teles for later use. You cannot just omit the two phono stage tubes, they run DC filament generated by the bias supply and it will throw your bias voltage off it you pull them out.
7199s are 'spensive, but at least they last a while. I've always found the RCAs to be a bit more enjoyable than the GEs, but Sylvania are good too.
Try to find an old stock Amperex or Mullard for the rectifier. In all honesty, I've never had one wear out on me, and I put 6-8 hours on my S-5000 amp every day.
Agreed.
The black plate 12AX7s that he sent with the unit work well but I like the Teles just as you do and I agree totally about the 7189s..You can't use EL84s in a Sherwood as they won't live very long.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
Talking about RCA 12AX7 black plate? Never heard a Tele outperform a RCA 12AX7 black plate. Want to sell those black plate tubes to me?

Oh I agree that the black plates are wonderful and they sound as good or better than the Teles depending on where they are used. They tend to be a bit more microphonic than the Teles when they get old and are run hard.

The tubes in the preamp are black plate RCAs.Those you have to buy on ebay used or NOS if Jim doesn't have those same ones..Jim has a lot of good nos and new production tubes that will sound really superb in there..
