Hi Everyone,
Do you know where I might find a review/comparison of the various 274B rectifiers that are available these days?
Also, looking for a comparison of the Psvane CV-181 and the Sophia 6sn7 too if anyone knows about that.
Thanks guys!
Jeff

Guys,
Thanks for your suggestions. I do have all kinds of NOS tubes at my disposal, and they're great, but that's not what my question is about.
It's about the new production tubes I mentioned. If you have any comments about what I actually posted about that'd be helpful, although I do appreciate your other comments as well.
Kind regards,
Jeff
Use Ting Sol 5U4GB in place of 274B. Tung Sol is best 5U4 available. Use Sylvania 6SN7GTA or early year 6SN7GTB with 'T' shaped plates placed in a 'Y' configuration. Both tubes are inexpensive.
Hi Jeff,
Though I don't have experience with fancy Chinese 6SN7, I have had the TJ Full Music 6SL7 in the input of my phono stage. Compared to the RCA and Tung-Sol tubes I have had in the same socket, the TJ had better detail in the frequency extremes, lower noise, less prone to microphonics, and very clean sonics.
The internal construction and presentation are like no tube I've seen before.
I had in my system for two weeks as a friend lent it to me as a favor, so I have no reason to toot the product to justify any expense paid.
Would I actually pay $100 to have this in my system? Sure I would, they were very nice.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the post on the TJ. The SE 6SN7 I have with its mini-ST bulb shape has performed well too, outperforming respected NOS 6SN7s from Ken-Rad & Sylvania, for example. I like the NOS tubes a lot, but there's some good tubes coming out of China too, which I'm glad to see. The way I say it, more good tubes is better than fewer good tubes!
Cheers,
Jeff
Jeff, came across this on the tubestore website...

Hey thanks Steven - appreciated. I ordered a pair for kicks just to check them out.
Best,
Jeff
Jeff, which brands of rectifiers will you be comparing the Pref Series to?

Hi Steven,
A number of different brands: NOS Tung-Sol, Sylvania, RCA, etc. (but no Western Electric), as well as some new stock Chinese versions, and a few other misc. tubes as I run across them. They may be 274b, 5u4g, 5R4GY, 5Z3PA, etc. I've run across one cheap Chinese rectifier that is really good and cheap. Hard to find though.
I may include some Mullard (or RCA) 5A4/GZ34 and others people have recommended as well. Just trying to do a nice little cross section with the only criteria being that it is a 5 volt rectifier drawing no more than 3 amps of filament current.
So far it's been interesting ... some sound really good, but don't play music that well, where others don't 'sound' as good, but play music really well.
Kind regards,
Jeff
Maybe too soon for the Chinese 6SN7 comparisons.
I don't have any experience with the rectifiers but the other posts address that.
As far as 6SN7s go I would and do buy old stock tubes wich are plentiful and depending on what you want not overly expensive. Although I need them like a hole in the head I couldn't resist a sweet deal on a pair of tall bottle Sylvania Ws with metal bases for the same prioce that some of these fancy Chinese tubes cost. If you know what type of sound you want there are plenty of bargains to be had.
I must admit, however, that I am curious about these new "special" tubes but remain a bit skeptical.
Steve
Jeff,
I don't know of comparisons, but I have a thought to share.
A 274B is a really expensive rectifier tube. It could EASILY be bested by running two common directly heated rectifier tubes like ten dollar 5U4Gs and / or 5V3 As, with closely matched sections. Two of either should really WHOMP performance-wise, a single 274, and at about 10 % the cost !!
Is your audio goal running a status tube, or just plain ole all-out audio performance ??

Hi Jeff,
My goal is neither of your suggestions, but rather to have a little fun by doing a little tube rolling in my Fi 300B monos.
I tried the RCA 5R4GY (brown base) with a nice result, but have never tried the 274B, so I thought that might be fun to try, but was trying to narrow down the choice a bit.
Kind regards,
Jeff
The problem with a 5R4 is it is a high drop, high Z rectifier, suitable more for a preamp than a DHT amp's demands. But, the 5R4 sounds nice, because it is a directly heated rectifier.
Of course, lower Z 5U4's and 5V3s, are also directly heated rectifiers, and out-perform dynamically the 5R4 easily. Paralleling two is cool to listen to !
In addition to a fancy-schmancy 274B (I don't like any of the WE tubes generally) listen to a single 5V3 or a 5V3A in your amp, the A needing only 3 A. of filament current, the earlier 5V3 needing 3.7 to maybe 4 A. of current, and its FUN to behold and hear.
