I just bought my first true SET. It's based on the 6B4G output tube, which is the 6V version of the 2A3
Both tubes (1940-1950 vintage Ken-rads) are very microphonic, one extremely so. Is this normal for power triodes?

DHTs can vary a lot in microphonics. Does it matter? Even microphonic tubes can sound OK. What's the problem when you use them?

"Does it matter?"
As said below, all tubes have some microphonics. It's just a question of how bad.
I've had tubes so microphonic that they caused accoustic feedback. Obviously, that is unacceptable. Also, severly microphonic tubes can cause distortion when low frequencies from the music excite the microphonics.
I've had 2A3s, 300Bs, 10/10Y/801As, 845s and probably a few I'm forgetting. For the most part they were not overly microphonic. Maybe a couple of the real early 10s, but as a general rule, they aren't that bad.
Just my experiences...

The simple tap with eraser test always seems to elicit some kind of a response. So depending on the natural response to specific testing procedures you can make almost any tube "microphonic. The tubes may have changed little but the obssession with tubes may have spuriously increased the percentage the number of microphonic tubes.

I once was complaining to a very knowledgeable audiophile/builder/friend about how microphonic a particular tubes was. He said how do you know it's microphonic, I replied "I was tapping on it and could hear it", but added "I sure like the way it sounds". He says "then quit tapping on it". Never tapped on a tube since!:-) Having said that, I think tube dampers can be a good thing.

To some degree, that goes without saying. I Haven't found most power triodes in general to be more so.
