Looking for a nice sounding 6CA4 for me friend's Counterpoint SA-5000 preamp. Thanks for your suggestions and help!

EZ81 = 6CA4. Mullard is best. Also look for US brand name stating Made in GT Britain.
Look no further than the RFT EZ80 or the EZ81. Either of those will work in the Counterpoint. The EZ81 is the Euro equiv of the 6CA4, the EZ80 is the Euro 6V4. IMO, the Counterpoint preamps actually sound better with the 6V4/EZ80 even though they come stock with the 6CA4/EZ81. Before the Alta Vista site went down last Friday, the super deluxe rectifier that Mike sold for big bucks was the RFT. They are super easy to spot as the plates are stacked inside the bottle at right angles to one another. You can pick them up on eBay for very cheap. The RFT is better in every respect to any other brand of rectifier in the Counterpoints. I know because I tried them all. U709's included.
