Mike, out of curiosity, which octal sweep are you converting your servos to? Although I have virtually a lifetime stash of 6GE5's, I was interested to see if there were any possible Russian subs. As you know, the 6GE5 and 6HB5 are essentially drop-in subs for one another in the servos. I also found a third tube that is pretty close electrically, but has different pin-out - the 6JN6. If I understand your post correctly, you also have a set of transformer interfaces for your Acoustats? Most Acoustat owners are either in one camp or the other ... might be fun to be in both. Either camp though, they are awesome, awesome speakers.Mike

The best option is the octal version of the EL509 which is made by JJ..The biggest problem with the servo amps is socket arcing which takes out tubes. You have the 5kv bias for the panels and the best fix is to remove the old compactron sockets and hardwire octal teflon sockets in by using a couple spacer supports for each socket.then run good wire form sockets to board connections and you will eliminate all your troubles...Those sockets cannot take that 5kv bias on them and thats why teflon octals are a good choice.
I only have a pair of Acoustat 3s but I have the new Martin Logan CLXs and an old pair of monoliths.

Thanks for the advice, Mike. When the servos were rebuilt last year I had MS replace all the old compactron sockets with brand new ones and he also applied a tweak or two of his own to the sockets to help prevent arcing. Seems to have done the trick as I don't have arcing issues. The old sockets was a different story though. They were well worn and pins didn't fit tightly, corroded, etc. and arcing at times was an issue. I have the Monitor 4's, and the upgraded servos driving them is the closest thing to "being there" I've ever experienced. Amazing sound from them, simply amazing.
I wonder what sockets he used because I would rather stick with the 6HB5s being I have 40 of them in NOS.

I'll ask Mike and pass back his answer to you.
Thanks,.

Mike,
I spoke with the other Mike yesterday about the compactron sockets. He told me that he does not use any special brand/make of socket, but what he does do when replacing sockets on the servos is to remove the pin contacts for all unused pins from the sockets. He then applies something he called corona dope to the underside of the socket to further help reduce the opportunity for arcing. He also told me that he takes pains in assuring that all the final solder connections are as clean as can be, and are physically separated as much as possible - again further reducing the opportunity for arcing. It appears to work in that I have not had a incident of arcing since the sockets were replaced.
Hope this helps you.
Mike

Corona dope we used to use to seal flyback transformers to keep from ozone arcing.
