what is the difference between an el34 and el34b tube?

the same as any EL34. JJ has used the designation E34L and the Russians have made the EL34G. All the same as an EL34.
The 6CA7, which is a direct sub for the EL34, is actually a beam power tube, rather than a pentode, so it is more akin to the 6550.
This tube is not bad, IMO.
I really like the Chinese EL34B. Nice balanced sound with more low end than most EL34's. New Sensor also makes the Tung Sol EL34B, which is probably my favorite new-production EL34. It has the bass extension of the Chinese EL34B with the clarity and extension of a good KT-66. My current favorite power tube is the new-production T.S. 6L6G big bottle.
Vinyl + Tubes= Bliss
I just had a client bring in a Blackstar guitar amp using a pair of Chinese EL34B output tubes, TAD selected.
One tube has a control grid short, and the other measures 50% of normal, an unusually low reading for any power tube in my tester.
The amp is less than two years old and has reportedly had only moderate use. There are no bias supply or coupling capacitor issues.
Yes, but is it a good tube. IME not so good, there are better EL34s out there. One thing I did learn though is that certain tubes (brands/types) work better in some circuits than in others. For instance, I generally like the now old fashioned JJ E34L blue glass tube in my Consonance M100 Plus integrated but nothing beats (so far) the EH big bottle 6CA7 in my Consonance Cyber 800 monoblocks.

and use it in my restomodded Dyna 70. The EH 6CA7 and the Russian 6N3C-E, or whatever it's called, don't sound too good in this amp. The Chinese EL34B sounds quite nice. My favorites are the Tesla E34L black base. As you say, it's horses for courses. BTW, who do you like in the Belmont next weekend?

I am begining to have high hopes for the GL re-issue KT-77... I haven't tried them yet.
Anyway back to your question.
I think it's logical in a longer race to bet on the odds on favorite.. This is not an actual prediction or any semblance thereof and I am not responsible for any losses which may or may not be incurred as a result of .... etc. etc.
