For a single triode, the 6ER5 and similar have a plate resistance not too different from half a 6SN7 (5K vs. 7K) but much higher gain factor (about 70 vs. about 20.) Some of these types e.g. 6GK5, 6ES5 are very inexpensive. Jim McShane has them, among others. They can perform very well, but are not electrically (or probably sonically) equivalent to a good 6SN7. Perhaps someone else knows a closer equivalent?

the 'or something' can include plate or grid caps...and under those conditions you've got the required more-than-8-connections to employ.
