Can the Sylvania 6SN7 1952 Badboy tube have the getter flashing on the top like the chrome dome? All of my Badboys have the bottom getter flashing.

I have 4 pairs of these, one with the Marconi label. They were made from 51 through 53. They sound a lot like the VT-231s except that they have really excellent bass response. These are among the very best 6SN7s, second only to the euphonic 6SN7W IMO and possibly Tung Sol 6SN7 which I have but have not had the time to audition yet.
Everyone who owns 6SN7s should own a pair of these. They are faultless.

Any idea where the BadBoys label came from? I've had Sylvania 6SN7s of all types, but I've never heard bottom getters referred to as BB. Just curious.

Yep. Definitely Robert (when he was still here and not off his rocker :P) He got some Sylvania 6SN7GT from Nevel (sp?) in Australia which were quite special. Further investigation from other AA members found out the special quality is found in Sylvania 6SN7GT (t plate, bottom getter, copper wiring/rods) from late 1951 to early 1953 ... the very last months this particular type of Sylvania 6SN7 was manufacturered.
He's still around and far from "off his rocker", but I do recall that he moved about 5 years ago and had a pair of newborn twins and doesn't hang online anymore as a result.

Len, didn't you have a picture comparing construction of the true bad boy versus the bottom getter Sylvania GT (VT231)?
I think this is a result of an ad for "Bad Boys" on another site. T plate 3 rivet tubes but with a top getter and significant flashing. These are clearly not Bad Boys but possibily the early GT or perhaps more likely the early style GTA given the date codes he mentions. He doesn't show the top etching. I wrote to him and he has ammended his ad.
In any event I too prefer this style of tube for it's clarit, imagery and speed.
That is how I got mine. They still show up but my tube collecting has come to an abrupt halt.

Yes, this post was a result of an ad posted on "another" site that listed the tubes as "bad boys". They had the three rivet hole black T plates but with a top getter flashing. I could not find the original ad today, or it has been amended.
Every so often a bad boy comes up on Ebay and the seller doesn't know what he has and the buyers are asleep or something. I've gotten 7 of them that way over the last 3-4 years, but the most recent was not recently.

It was indeed Robert who put the name to them. Back in 2000 or 2001, Robert got hooked up with a gentleman from Australia who'd unearthed a substantial cache of the 1952 Syls and was selling them on ebay for, are you ready, $60/pair. In a post back then, Robert was describing their sound and dropped the bad-boy name on them and it has stuck ... with very good reason IMO. They are an amazing tube.

As I don't use the 6SN7 anywhere, I don't know much about them except that the 6CG7 was done to have a more compact version.
However, when I acquired an EICO HF-14 mono tube integrated (3-12AX7, 2-EL84, 6X4), I was given two 6SN7GTA's, one a bottom getter RCA and the other the Sylvania in the photo, which has a top getter. The thing is the flashing covers so large an area, the top mica is solid, and the getter is so pressed up at the top of the bottle, I can't see the getter shape or size. What kind of getter do these have? There is a marking on the base of,"3-48", but whether this is a 1948 tube I don't know. If so, this would be my oldest tube, the next being 1949 RCA 12BH7A's.
I do like the 6CG7, so I imagine it's cousin the 6SN7 can make some nice sounds as well.

"3-48" is a tube that was made during the 48th week of 1953. If the tube in the photo is a GTA then you have what many consider to be one of the best GTAs ever made. I have never been able to see the getters on this chrome dome tubes so I cant help you in this area. My guess is that they would be "D" or horseshoe getters. I have a bunch of these early 50s GTAs.
The top getters with T plates are from the 40s. These are actually more rare. The Bad Boys are all circa 51-53 and are all bottom getters.
I dont have piece of equipment that uses 6SN7s currently. How do the 1940s "T" plates sound compared to the B.B.s?
The 40s tubes are not as nice as the early 50s Bad Boys IMHO. In the various gear I have had, the bass has been slightly fatter and less well controlled, and the 40s tubes have less sparkle on top.
You may have tried a tired specimen, because I've found the early 40s top-getter 6SN7GT to be much more aggressive than the Bad Boys. The Bad Boys has a very refined sound from top to bottom IME, but the earlier "chrome dome" Sylvania 6SN7GT has sharper attack, especially the treble.
Maybe. I have five or six of these, and while they are all pulls, they test very strongly and their getters are all sharp.
Maybe different sound in different circuits. But the flashing on these tubes stay sharp even when they're used, so it's hard to say if they saw use from the equipment they were pulled from.
All Badboys have bottom getters and hence bottom flashing. Sylvania did make some top getter tubes with plates exactly like the Badboy plates, but this is not the same tube.

May I ask ,what tubes model is call Bad boy ? Is it refer to Sylvania 6SN7W short bottle?

Bad Boys are not the 6SN7W. They are the 6SN7GT tall bottle/bottom getter/T-plate from circa 1951 to 1953. The most apparent difference is their t-plates have 3 holes each as opposed to the earlier two hole types (VT-231/6SN7GT from 1944 to 1951).
mica vs a translucent one. When you see the two it is obvious.
