I found the gec smoke glass a little more transparent also and a little more dynamic as its expected but after you get time on these tubes,I guarantee you the grain disappears. My favorite is still the smoke bottle GEC/GEN but, these are right there with them. The difference we may be hearing may not be the quality of the tube but,it may be the impedance difference. The kt66 is 6.0k PP and the 6P3S-E is 6.6k. I had found different results in different amps but in the Leak ST50,I found your exact results.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.

If they get even better it will be great! I have about 400 or 500 hours on my first set. In my amp, I much perfer these tubes to the Genelex KT88 reissue--but I am not really a KT88 fan. So far--have yet to try a original Tung-Sol or Ge 6550. Those are my next targets.
Hi,
Just out of curiosity, what amp are you using all of these in? As we all know the amp and system are very important in determining which tubes we like the most. I know the Gold Lion KT88 is the best modern production tube I have ever heard in a Citation II. But that is in a Citation II. I completely believe you could prefer something else in a different amp, so am curious as to what gear you are using.
cheers,
Don
Hi Don:
I am using them in a Rogue Audio Stereo 90 amp.Preamp is a modified Audio Research SP14.Source is a J.A, Micheel Orbe/Tecnoarm/Benz M2 and speakers are Totem Hawks. All wiring is Kimber.
The Stereo 90 comes with EH KT88 and was designed for KT88/6550 but can also take EL34,KT66. When I asked Mark at Rogue about 6L6 and EL37 he said he wasn't sure the amp could run those and to be careful. Well I have run 6P3S-E, RCA Blackplate 6L6GC, Tung-Sol 6L6GC-STR,GEC KT66 all with no problem.I have also run GL KT88 re-issue,Mullard XF2 EL34, JJ KT77.
I am drawn to the 6L6/KT66 sound. To me it seems more linear and dynamic than the KT88 sound.More focused, less romanticly tube-like. But I can certainly see how other people could feel differently. Like you said, it all depends on system synergy.
Best Regards,
David
