In it's first incarnation my tube system started out with a hum that was quite unnerving. After reading a few threads in the archive I broke the system down to Pre and amp and added components until the culprit revealed itself. It was my Sony DVD/SACD player or so I thought. When I unplugged the component video from the DVD player the hum vanished. As the component cable was hooked to my TV the end culprit was labeled the TV.
Yesterday the ole Sony DVD finally gave up the ghost and presented me with the OPPOrtunity (sorry, couldn't resist) to buy the OPPO BDP83SE that has been all the rage. After getting it home and beginning the setup process I hooked up the HDMI to the TV and guess what? Right, HUM. Now some, it if not all, of you might be nodding your heads thinking "silly Squid, everyone knows you can't introduce a connection from a television to a tube system without getting the dreaded HUM". IF this is the case I had never heard of it but hey, I'm a bit of a newcomer to the tube world.
So finally the question, is it possible to somehow make this connection and not get hum, some method that escapes me that might make this marriage possible? Or Is it just the price of admission?

Do you have the TV/DVD connected to cable TV? That often causes a ground loop. If so, try disconnecting the cable TV coax. If it's standard cable rather than HD, you can put two 300ohm-coax transformers back to back to break the ground loop. It's worked for me in the past.
Best of luck,

Try putting a cheater plug on the TV.
I attempted the cheater plug trick to no avail. But here is the REAL kicker. With the HDMI plugged into the TV and the power cord COMPLETELY removed from the TV still get hum. It seems to be something with the television whether the TV is connected to power or not. And yes I removed all other inputs to the TV during the test, the plot thickens....
I want to mention this however. The OPPO sounds quite good (with no video output connected). I hate to go on a fan-boy parade without giving it a few weeks to "burn in" but initial thoughts are encouraging. Am curious what time will develop with this little gem. Quite an improvement over my old Sony DVP-S9000es.

Does the OPPO have a 3-prong or 2-prong power cord? You may want to experiment with connecting the case of the Oppo to the chassis of your other gear, and the chassis of the TV (use a bolt into one of the wall mount thread inserts, those are likely to be grounded.
The OPPO has a standard 2 prong cord. I experimented with the old Sony to this end to no avail. I will experiment tomorrow with your suggestions, wish me luck. Tube amp Musical Reference RM 9 by the way.
