I have an AH! Njoe Tjoeb CDP that also uses 6922's in the output stage. I'm currently running a pair of 60's Toshiba 6DJ8's that I've been told sound very similar to Amperex Bugle Boys. They're alot cheaper than the BB's when you can find 'em. The JJ 6922's sound almost identical to the Toshiba's in my CD player and are a good choice for new production 6922's, IMO.
Follow Ups:
I too have a AH Tjoeb CDP. It came to me with Gold Pin NOS Siemens E288CC's. I've tried several different 6DJ9 types of tubes in her, all NOS, including a pair of 6922 PQ's. Simply put, the Siemens have the biggest soundstage, are neutral and will last longer than any current production 6922 IMHO.

I agree with Pat on the JJs. Unlike their crummy octal tubes, their E88CC has gotten better and better. My last batch was really excellent.
If you want a warmer tone use the JJs, they're now a good tube. For more neutral tone and the lowest noise use the EH.
I agree with you. I have always found a good place for them, and their predecessors made by Tesla. Mainly in amps. Nice tone, a bit on the warm side and limited HF extension.
I'll take a pass on the EH's though in sources and pre-amps. Quiet yes, but neutral? Tonally maybe. I tried them in my SP10II and a Raysonic CDP and I found the mids thru upper bass thick and muddy when playing discs with very well recorded complex music, mainly classical. Not as apparent with jazz and pop, just sounds like it could be a recording with a better low end. I haven't tried them in amps yet. FWIW. For reference, in newer production 6dj8/6922's I usually find I like the EI's in most sources and pre-amps (wish they would work in my SP10!).

Until the last year or so I had a good place for them too - the trash bin. The quality was horrible. But the last 3-4 batches in a row have been excellent and improving.

That's what I mean.

That's not a widely held view, FYI. In fact it's the first time I've ever heard anything at all like that. If the EH aren't liked, it's usually from lack of "warmth" as compared to the European tubes. I thank you for the feedback though, I'll file it away for future reference for sure...
That's why it's always good to remember your ears/system/room/etc. are the final judge of any component in your system.
BTW, you of course know that Ei is shut down, and there is no new Ei stuff being made. And the old stock 6DJ8 family is drying up VERY quickly. So it's good to have the two current tubes - both are FAR better than the old Sovtek.
"I'll file it away for future reference for sure....". I bet in the same place you put the old JJ's. :-)Jim, FWIW, I bought the EH's based in large part on your prior indorsements here. You just can't please everybody, even with free information! I'd hoped they might be a fit for the SP10. Another Asylum member used them in his SP10 and liked them. Obviously there is a lot of stuff between the tubes and the sound, and between the sources and the tubes. Perhaps I've just become too acclamated to the sound of 6h23's and old Sovteks from the same time period in the '10' and compensated for this elsewhere.
Yeh, too bad about the demise of EI. Fortunately I've got plenty (for me) and the supply of quality new production 6922's/6dj8's is really thin. Like my hair, and its not going to get better, I think.
Chuck,

Oh no! I'm a feedback sucking pig! The more opinions I can amass the better prepared I am for future questions. I wasn't kidding!

Just so you know - the 6922 EH IS a 6H23...
either Sovteks nor 6h23's, but if the new 6H23's and the 6922 EH's sound alike I'll take your word for it. To my ears my 25+ year old 6h23's and Sovteks of the same vintage sound remarkable alike (some even say they are the same tube, its that close to my ears but I like to 'think the Sovteks are just a 'tad' cooler) but when I sub'd in the new EH's in my SP10 and they sounded nothing like the old tubes I had in it, nor the Sovteks that my 6h23's replaced. I had them all on hand for A/B'ing. Now you've got me curious. I'm going to set up appointments with my ear Dr and if nothing shows up, I next consult with my head Dr. :-) Maybe I'm just a nut!
