I have a pair of EL84's that look indentical to the 1950s Amperex "D" getter EL84's.The tubes in question have the code rX3 ABF and were made in Wien Austria.Any ideas as to what they might be?

You have kind of answered your own question. Those would be Austrian Philips production; the correct code is A8F, meaning they are from 1958. You can find these Austrian ones labelled as Amperex, although most of them came from Holland (Philips again).
Thanks for the feedback. It is an 8 not a B.So in essence there the same as the my 1950s Amperex D getter EL84s?I seem to detect some subtle differences between the Amperex and the now Philips tubes.
Yes, it's essentially the same design and technology for both, but I would be surprised if there wasn't a difference in sound, so your ears are probably right.
Great,Thanks for your help.
