Just checking to see if anyone has any thoughts on how the 3C compares sonically to the 3A1? Thanks
Follow Ups:
The SP3A-1 had more of a solid bass and was not as fat as the stock SP-3. The upper midrange glare, (which plagues all the ARC SP 3 preamps) was tamed, though still pronounced in the SP-3A-1. The high end in the SP-3 was tingy-pingy - less so with the SP3A-1. Listen to bells and you will know what I mean.
If you have an Sp-3 and are thinking about a 3A-1, then its best have its entire power supply rebuilt for you. If you call Leonard at ARC, he can fix you straight - taking you all the way to an SP-3C for a Kilo Buck. Re-tube the preamp with Tung Sol 12AX7s if you cannot get NOS (do not try, Sovtek LPS, EH derivatives or Teslas (too mushy))
All the best,
Vic

Thanks - any chance you can describe the sonic differences you heard between the 3A1 and the 3C? (and what source, amp, and speakers you were using?) Thanks again
I truly do not know except they wanted to translate the SP-3 to the more lucid and precise SP-8.
I had a tech completely mod my SP-3 a few years ago. Now I listen to the Ming Da MC 2A3 as my reference preamp.
All the best,
Vic
