I would like to try some 6L6 tubes in my PrimaLuna Dialogue II, but I am a bit overwhelmed by the number of choices. In doing some research, it seems as though the GE 6L6GC sets the standard; but I do not want to pay that much for NOS--until I at least know that I like a 6L6 tube...
What new production tubes would would be the best to try in my amp?
BTW--I know it is silly, but I REALLY like the looks of the new Tung-Sol 6L6Gs, but I am not sure if they would work in the PrimaLuna (It calls for 6L6GCs). Also, they don't seem to be available at very many vendors--Should that raise any concerns?
Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I am going to try the SED 6L6GC. If I like them, perhaps I will get some NOS GEs...
Frankly they never would have dawned on me to use. I just don't think about the 6L6GC that much....but this guy.....in HIS system (you may hate them) says they are king. Cheap to try so why not.
I've tried almost every 6L6GC I can get my hands on and have yet to find anything that sounds as good as the SED 6L6GC. They beat everything else with the possible exception of the RCA black plates.
Not only do they have a terrific sound, they also are very rugged and hold a very steady bias. They seem to last a very long time.
I have been hearing quite a bit about the Tung Sol 6L6GC and how great they are so I guess I will get a quad of them and see if they are as nice as the SEDs.
well, that's my two cents worth

I am considering those--I saw his comments on your website...
Can you tell me the plate voltage on the Dialogue 2?
Thanks!
My intent is not to dispute what Kevin Deal asserts, mainly as he is much more knowledgable about tubes than I am; but I had SED 6L6s in my preamp, and found them unrefined compared to RCAs and a couple of KT66s that I tried. I now use NOS GEC KT66s (got a really good price on a matched pair), but that is another matter entirely. The RCAs and KT66s were all NOS, but not stratospherically expensive. I am a firm believer in paying a premium for long-life NOS tubes. The pleasure that you derive from the quality of sound that you get is actually cheap if you look at it as $/hr. of listening time. I have yet to find a new tube that compares with the better NOs. Yikes, that's a helluva bold statement. Remember, I am not saying that there aren't new tubes that are competitive, just that, in my relatively limited experience, I haven't heard one.
These sound really good. Make sure you get the E version with the coin base, not the regular 6S3P with the big black base. I've dealt with Alexer1 on many occasions, no problems.

Thanks for the tip. 6l6gc's are my favorite output tube. I'm looking forward to trying these.
Ok. I'm curious as to how much are the NOS GE's are that you mention, but no matter.
Send me a note and I might be able to help you out for NOS.

I've used SED 6L6GC's in a Prologue One and the Prologue 5. Compared to SED EL34's they have a smoother, i.e. less mid-range emphasis, more linear, less color. Sort of like comparing the SED 6550 v the SED KT88. All of these are excellent tubes. FWIW I believe the GC v G amounts to a small difference in power output (the GC puts out more) but according to Kevin Deal it shouldn't affect the amps operation. BTW, for me, the difference is one of clarity v mid-range 'color', and the choice was determined by the speakers I was using.
I think i got mine at Virginia Tube Audio. It's a nice tube. I haven't used the coke bottle 6L6GC.
6L6s's have gotten a reputation for being fast and detailed vs. balanced and smooth. But when I compare them to JJ KT77s, there are no night and day differences, just a slightly different presentation that i won't break down into parts.
The thing i listen to is the overall presentation without being too finicky about the details of it all. For me, it's come down to just three tubes that reflect my range of sound preferences and play the music i like best very well: JJ KT77, JJ 6L6GC, and the Tung-Sol.
I haven't tried the 6550 in any version, but I have some Russian military tubes on the way for like $29 a quad. We'll see.
Greetings from the sunny Brønshøj riveria on the banks of the lovely Utterslev Mose
I have the Prologue II and am using the SED 6L6GC's and am really digging the sound. Noticable improvement in soundstage but still retaining the warmth of the SED EL34's I was using previously. I got mine at Upscale and the price was a reasonable 80 per quad + shipping. I usually get my tubes through Kevin at Upscale or Jim McShane (both Audioasylum sponsors). Both offer great service.
The new Tung Sol 6L6GC-STR has been a nice addition to my Dynaco copies.
