Just picked up a beautiful Joule 100 MkIII, which came with a pair of Top Hat tube dampers. The previous owner told me that they had come installed when he bought the unit but that when he replaced those tubes he never reinstalled the dampers.Questions:
Can anybody tell me about the impact Top Hats have had on the sound of their system - especially a Joule?
Can anybody tell me how to attach them to the tubes - and if there is a way to do it that is reversible without damaging some really nice NOS
Is anybody using something they like a whole lot better that you think I would be better off considering?
Thanks in advance
Follow Ups:
Top Hats used regular ole Elmers glue
Top Hats are wonderful dampers. They are much more effective at damping then Herbie's. Superglue works well to attach them, and it's easily removable with some gentle prying (if required, assisted by nail polish remover or paint thinner). Its effect? It dampens, and dampens quite effectively. If you want even more dampening, consider VTS's octal brass dampers. If you want more subtle dampening, consider Herbie's (any of their model as they all work about the same to me).
thnx guys - I much appreciate the help - sounds like a worthwhile experiment - think I'll try it on the tubes that came with the unit before I start rolling my own in
They come with glue, though maybe xmas didn't get it with the Joule. The Top Hats glue comes off just with a bit of hot water. No mess, no fuss. Audio Advancements (Hart is his name) is where I got mine from. Maybe check out the website a give Hart a call to ask what kind of glue to get. I wouldn't want to hassle with removing something like super glue when its unnecessary.
use a couple of drops of white glue at two points where the TH contact the tube envelope. That's what the factory provided. That way the glue is easily removable with a bit of water.
If you can get the original adhesive, go for it. But seeing as Top Hats aren't manufactured/sold any more, I've had to resort to super glue. The stuff comes off extremely easy and without any residue. At worst, I need some nail polish remover to help ease it off. But usually a little pressure or a razor blade is all that's required.
