My cj pv12 makes a high-pitched noise from the right channel periodically. It is almost beyond an audible range but it is very noticable. A slap on the chassis ends the noise and it doesn't always happen. I have talked to others with the same problem. Any ideas
I've experienced the same thing with the PV-10A. As I understand it, this sound is tube microphonics -- an unwanted vibrational effect, usually heard coming from the preamp's output tubes. The standard fix is to replace the tubes, but I've come to believe that you can also reduce this sound by minimizing vibrations in the preamp. So make sure your equipment stand is exactly level and rock solid. Try adding mass on top the preamp (but be sure to allow for ventilation). You could also move equipment stand outside the listenting room, or if this is not possible, then to an area within the room that has fewer resonances. See the FAQ section's articles on speaker placement for info on this.
CJ preamps are notorious for microphonic problems. Best solution is to change tubes. Isolation of the unit may help (as noted previously), but tube rolling is only sure way to erradicate. I have a PV-5 and it took several changes before I settled on a tube combo that minimized microphonics but was consistant with sound quality.Good Luck,
