Please give me more than, "it sounds good!"
thanx all.
Okay then - "because it sounds REALLY good". Mine is about 70 hrs old and it just keeps getting better.I had a older AA L1 and xlp and wanted a better phono stage. The L1 was good for clean sound, imaging (all the visual stuff) and dynamics - I lived with it for 3 yrs. I moved to the 3a expecting the same but with a phono stage. The 3a is much stronger in the bass and fuller in the mids. On top of all that it has very good parts quality, it's reliable, and that phono stage is pretty good. Before, I was using a sub, but now it really isn't needed, if that tells you something about the difference in preamps. I din't know that the rest of my system could do that!
Enough internet hype on the 3a from this honest non-expert. Did I a/b it against similarly-priced competitors? No, I didn't have a chance. If I had less to spend and didn't need a phono stage, I'd try the Adcom, based on the Stereophile review. If I wanted something possibly better, there are scads of things for significantly more $ (Roland, CJ, Levinson, BAT for example). I was impressed with the Rogue in the 3a's price range, and it has a remote. Maybe some of the lesser BATs sound similar to the 3a, I don't know. But the 3a is a safe bet and no one has much negative to say about it, in spite of the fact that there must be some serious envy out there from competitors.
Please a/b it against some competitors and let me know if I screwed up - I love anxiety.
I can only assume you are referring to the Modulus 3a.I agree with all that Jack said. I have gone full circle and purchased another AI preamp, after having lived with two BAT pre's for the last couple of years. I am planning on a full review in the not too distant future, but let me just say, believe the hype.
Oz
It got a lot of good press, its reasonably priced, and it has a phono-thelast being a big part of it.
