First you say that in 6922s NOS tubes are not significantly better than Sovtek 6922 (I strongly disagree btw), then you say to try the black top Sovtek 6922 because they sound better than the silver top. So which is it?
I think you might have misunderstood what I said, what I said is that there is only maybe a handful of NOS 6922 among the many thousand types of NOS 6922 out there that are superior to Sovtek 6922 in "ALL" aspect of sonic quality and in "ALL" application.Among the handful that I mentioned, which include for example, earliest Simens CCa, Telefunken E188CC, earliest Telefunken E88CC, Amperex Holland "PW" 6922 and some very rare type of GEC CV2492, are all very expensive and rare (> US$150 each).
For the lesser NOS 6922, many of them are still superior to Sovtek 6922 in "MOST" aspect but not "ALL" particular in terms of bass response. And some even more modiocre NOS 6922 simply sound "different" from the generic Sovtek 6922 instead of better.
I must disagree with Tim here. I have been very hard pressed to find ANY 6922 that sounds as bad as the Reflector/Sovteks. Their ONLY virtues are consistency and very low noise. I suppose though, if you did compare, that "Black Top" Sovteks may well sound better than "Silver Top" ones. No inconsistency from Tim, there. And he did qualify his other comments quite clearly. ARC hybrid preamps, BTW, follow Tim's rules. They just plain won't work with some NOS types. Weird oscillations, noises, random scary shit...then the same valve works just fine in lots of other stuff...I remember running into this with retubing SP-11's.
