I am thinking of having some mods done to my ASL mini fono and my Philips 963SA. I would rather not ship these out of town. I would rather give it to somone locally. I have called them and inquired about these units. They have not worked on them before. I will have to take them in and have them looked at for $89.95 each. Then he will tell me what he can do and how much it will cost. If I choose to do the mods the initial cost is deducted. I just want to know if this is normal and do they have a good rep? Thanks

Follow Ups:
John has done mods for two of my friends. They both have Jolida 502`s. He`s a good guy and does great work. Both friends are very happy with their amps now.I heard one amp before and after and whatever he did made a very nice improvement. I think he enjoys what he does and knows alot about tube amps. I believe his prices are reasonable but maybe a bit on the high side.
One friend is taking his dac in next so he must be happy.
What kind of mods are you looking to do? The ASL is probably pretty simple so you may be able to do it yourself. Search the Hi-Rez asylum and see if anyone doing mods for the Philips is in your area. I'd rather give it to someone with good knowledge of the 963sa, then just to let someone else try it out.

With the ASL it's probably just cap replacement. I'd like better bass, treble with a little more dynamics and a little cleaner sound. Sometimes the ASL impresses me but it has a pretty flat soundstage.I have been reading alot about the 963 mods. The one I have sounds very good but a little cold. At a minimum I would like to replace the caps with blackgate or equivelant. If I could get pictures of where these caps go I can do it myself. I am also interested in clock replacement and other things I've read about. But I have no idea what these things are. Cost is a factor to some extent. I don't know if it's worth $600 to have someone do all mods on the 963.

They know what they are doing. Mr. Mcormack even makes his own tube amps. and preamps that he sells on the retail market.

John does do good work he rebuilt my golden tube audio SI50 amp it had a bad transformer and other problems. John built a outboard box for the power supply bigger transformer it sounded great . He did all the work to rebuild this amp with no schematic as golden tube is no longer around.

Ya I've seen thier web site. Just hoping someone with personal experience can tell me more. Like if the guy is reasonable in price and if his mods are good.
