Well, the Scott 299-b amp I recently purchased has one bad 7189 Telefunken ouput tube. What should I use as a replacement? I have read the archives and found I could use Sovtek EL84M. Any ideas?

You may get different recommendations from different sources but the only "true" 7189 replacement in current/recent production is the Sovtek EL84M or Russian equivalent 6n14n-eb or ev (with the "n" actuallly being a pi sign). BUT .... The JJ EL84, regular Sovtek EL84 and the Ei EL84 are all said to work fine although life will be limited compared to the NOS 7189's. My Scott tech has informed me that all 3 of the above regular EL84's work fine and I believe that Ned of Triode Electronics also states the same on his website.

IME and IMO the Sovtek M's are worth it.they sound fine, and I'm quite picky.

HFB,Try the 1970's Reflector-made (not Sovtek labeled) 6pi14pi-EB. "EB" makes this tube mil spec. Tough, lasts long, and has pretty nice aggressive tone.
Yeah, Sounds like the 6pi14pi-eb is the way to go.
Thanks,

I experienced success with EI Gold Elite EL84 in a Fisher SA-100 providing 410 volts on the plate. Bias was set at -13.5 volts. These tubes sound good for new stock.

How long will the tube life last, this is fixed bias so it must be almost full 410 v cathode to anode...? I have a pair of Beard M70 that used 360 volts and tube will probably last only 1 yr. I am thinking of adding a choke to extend tube life/reduce B+....

The voltage is definately high. Tube life also depends upon the plate current. The -13.5 volts is higher bias than the standard -11 volts at 300 volts plate. I did not own the SA-100 long enough to know the tube life. The amp was originally bias at -10 volts or way too 'hot' for long tube life.
