Occasionally I lose the bass output from the right speaker, but the tweeter still works. I have done all the usual checks, swapping speakers, cables, tubes. The problem is down to my Cary 94L pre amp. The 2.0 signal caps are not by-passed, and the tape outs are OK. What would cause the pre amp to pass the high frequency but not the low. Thanks.

I had the same problem with a preamp of mine. Turned out to be the circuitry that made up the low pass filter had come unsoldered. I dont know what makes up the high pass/low pass circuitry in your amp but that circuit in the effected channel could be the culpret.
Good luck
