The 12AY7 is lower noise tube but it's gain (even cascaded=both sections tied together) is also lower than the 12AX7. I have a STUDER C37 circuit if you're interested in building a new preamp from scratch. but you would have to really know what the head inductance and impedance was. It features a cascode (very high gain) front end and passive and active EQ in two seperate stages. Cascodes produce higher even ordered harmonic distortion but lower odd ordered distortion products. But the C37 was designed for 7 1/2. 15 and 30 ips. No 3 3/4! James

In the meantime I took my G36 to a professional technician. It will cost me a fortune ... His guess is that one of the smaller caps needs to be replaced. I will see.I got the circuit of the G36. I will scan it for Your interest.
Thanks
ps: I have got a second G36 with halftrack and 3,5 or 7 ips. This one works excellent.
