I have recently heard some push pull amps that sounded truly glorius. Given my budget and what I've researched, purchasing the Cary Rocket 88, "used" is the best option at anything close to affordable. What would be the best "used" preamp that I could pair with it?
This will be connected to a very good source, and driving the AKG K1000 speaker/headphone hybrids. These require connection to the speaker outputs of an amp, though not any exceptional power otherwise.
I greatly appreciate any help, wisdom, suggestions or recommendations.

These might not be on your radar screen, so thought I'd point them out. I've never heard them.

There's a brand new Cary SLP-88 on Audiogon in your price range. I think it's from an authorized dealer. I got one recently for a similar price from another dealer. Not very attractive, but it sure sounds good.I'm using it with a solid state amp right now, but I have a Sonic Frontiers Power 1 on the way. My transition from solid state to tubes will be complete once that is delivered.
I didn't compare the SLP-88 to the SLP-98. Has anyone done that? I'm just curious.

The AES, AE-3 DJH Signature is a killer for $1200 new. It's simple, but has great sound. Upscale Audio, one of our sponsors has these. This preamp has no remote control, but for $500 more, Cary will add remote if you later decide you want it.

Great recommendation, Claud, thanks. Its one I already had on my short list, and its always a pleasure to deal with Kevin at Upscale. Was simply hoping to hear peoples thoughts on the best option.

How about a used Cary SLP98?...great pre-amp and beautiful to boot

As I noted in the previous post, the SLP98, while indeed a beautiful pre is out of my price range. Would a used SLP-308 be a good option?

The Rocket 88 is a superb push pull amp, very musical and transparent. What is your budget for a preamplifier? You really need a powerful sounding linestage or preamplifier to drive the Rocket 88. You might give the Sonic Frontiers Line 3 or Line 3 SE a try.
I was hoping to hold the cost of purchasing a good used preamp to pair with the Rocket 88 to about $1200.00, which unfortunately rules out the excellent Sonic Frontiers models you suggested.
Any other recommendations?

As far as used preamplifier goes, some excellent choice you must put into serious consideration for 1200 dollars range.1) Marsh P2000T hybrid linestage
2) Sunfire Classic tube preamplifier
3) Rogue 99 (you can upgrade to Magnum version later on when you feel comfortable to)Again, I highly recommend you hook these up with the Rocket 88, becuase this amplifier really need some "power" from the preamplifier or linestage.
