I was going through a junk drawer over the weekend and found an old pair of Lindsey-Geyer interconnects, the stiff wire jobbies with the brown cloth cover and wooden end pieces. I hadn't used these things for about 10 years and I was real curious how they would sound, since I am now using tube amplification and old Altec monitors.
Well right off the bat they sounded very nice, a noticible reduction in sibilance with no loss of high frequency detail.
Then I started digging out all the various tubes that I have aquired for my amp (modified Audio Note Kit 4) over the years. After trying a lot of different combinations I put in a set of Sylvania 6SN7's with red printing, and a pair of Telefunken 12AX7 smooth-plates. None of these had ever seen much time in the amp before because I had better sounding combinations of other tubes...or so I thought.
Holy Crap! It's as if I have a whole new system, with better resolving power than before. And it didn't cost me a thing. So now my Audio Researcg Litz-link cables are gathering dust on the floor behind my equipment cabinet. These $200+ cables got their asses soundly kicked by some goofy-looking $90 cables.
I have a few pairs of different types of Sylvania 6SN7's that I would like to swap for??? Email if you are interested.

This reminds me of a letter I read in Stereophile. This guy wanted to make a point to his friend who had a more expensive system than his and thought it was superior because of cost. He invited his friend over for a listening session. He sat his friend down in the sweet spot in the dark and turned on the system. After the music started playing his friend exclaimed how good it sounded. He turned on the lights to reveal a not so special 1980s Pioneer receiver coupled to a pair of Klipschorns via zip cord! I thought that was a good story. After reading that I figured I could go ahead and connect my Aristocrats via zip cord(and I did) and it sounds perfectly fine. I will never sell my EVs. Take care, Ted

Ted,
I think what your post makes me think of is the absolute subjectivity of stereo equipment and sound preferences. If this person had set me down in the dark and made me listen to the Klipschs with zip cord and an old Pioneer receiver, I would asked for 10 Advils and a Scotch after 5 minutes. This would have been made significantly worse if he had been using a digital front end. Not right, not wrong...just different. In my experience, I have never heard a horn speaker showed any sonic characteristics that I liked except for sheer pressure levels. The point, however, should be well taken that we sometimes hear what we want to hear, or perhaps what we expect to hear.

Finally someone spoke up about a horned speaker. I never have heard one I liked either - always ear piercing sharp pressure. My friend always builds with horns - and praises them - I just don't get it...

You should listen to an Oris(AER)/Sub system. You really haven't heard horns anything like this. Even Lamhorns shoud change your mind. They should be hooked up to decent SETs, of course.
