I use a parallel single ended 300B amp, which uses two 5687 and two 6072 as driver and input tubes, respectively. Do these have to be matched pairs? Or could I use unmatched singles? TIA for the advice.
Follow Ups:
For clinically correct reproduction of both channels - yes, the amp should display a high degree of symmetry. But that's in a pefect world. In reality, there are just so many variables that by itself it really doesn't matter. Even if everything in the amp was critically matched, there are significant variations between speakers, room reflections - even your own ears! Matching tubes is desirable but in no way essential to good sound in a system. If you can't hear any difference - matched or unmatched - it can't be bad. All that matters is how it sounds to you.I guess the best policy is to always eliminate the potential for errors that can add up to any significant system unbalance. Therefore having matched tube characteristics would be desirable so at least the amp doesn't contribute to any noticeable unbalance.
