In Reply to: Substitute for 1/2 a 12AX7? posted by David Anderson on March 08, 2002 at 14:11:38:
The 12DW7 twin triode is 1/2 an 'X7 and 1/2 a 'U7. A 12AX7 section with SS CCS loading would give you plenty of gain and the 12AU7 section would be your phase splitter. Both EI and JJ are currently producing 12DW7s and, of course, there is NOS.

That would work, Eli, except that the Kennedy mod is a Mullard circuit and, thus, uses 1/2 a 12AX7 and both halves of a 12AU7 per channel.David
Use a 12DW7 and a 12AU7 in each monoblock. Wire 1 amp to use section 1 of the 12AU7 and the other amp to use section 2 of the 12AU7. When the 12AU7 sections in use reach the end of their service lives, exchange the tubes between the 2 amps; you buy a new pair of 'U7s every other time you retube.

That's a good idea, Eli, but I think I might implement it in a different way. I can wire each amp to use different sections of the 12AX7 and just switch them when they start to show signs of age. I think it would be best to have 12AU7 sections made by the same manufacturer since it functions as a coupled cathode phase splitter and driver. Thanks for the good idea.

Your way is BETTER; I had 12DW7 on the brain. You have a greater selection of tubes, at lower cost, using 'X7s and 'U7S.Eli D.

6AV6 has the characteristics of a 12AX7 in a single 7 pin minature. There are also 2 diodes which can be strapped to the plate (ignored).- Gary
