fellow inmates, I'm salvaging parts from an old console and want to build a simple SET amp using a 12AX7 and an EL84. I am thinking of using the first half of the 12AX7 for a basic voltage amplifier and the second half to drive the output tube. This will be a basic amp for listening to while goofing around in the garage so I don't plan to spring for $100/ea. caps and top drawer resistors and etc. I want to use mostly the stuff (iron/sockets/pots) that came out of the console. Any simple schematics you'd like to suggest?????? thanks, ron

I needed a garage amp too and built an EL-84PP similar to the Eico HF-86 (search for Eico HF-86 schematic in google). I'm very fond of it, despite my other amps being 2A3-SE's. Has definitely some toe-tapping factor in it.Definitely worth a try if your console iron is PP too.
Before ending up with the HF-86 topology, i tweaked around a Leak
TL/12 schematic (with a Schmit phase splitter) and didn't like the sound at all.PS: The 7247 used in the front-end is one half a 12AX7, the other half
corresponding to a 12AU7. The 12AX7 is DC-coupled to the 12AU7,
perhaps this gives the kick to the amp. I hooked mine up in UL-mode with separate cathode bias resistors.Bye
Several ideas in archives, and also on Bona's site (see FAQ for link); one Mullard circut even has tone controls with the bass in the feedback loop. 1/2 the 12ax7 will drive el84 adequately (no need for 2 in a simple schematic) so could use one tube to drive a stereo SE el84. That's what I'm going to do with an old PE mono pp el84 that has a 6eu7 in it (6eu7 is a 6.3v version of the 12ax7 intended as a quieter version). All I need is a couple of output transformers. email me if you want. See http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/tubediy/messages/9930.html and link below for starts.
