Because upper ordered HD (especially upper ordered odd) is dissonant to the fundamental frequency while lower order HD (especially lower order even) is consonant to the fundamental frequency.

With nowadays instrumentation even more results might be easily obtained.
By the way, the papers basically confirm that the best way to fully appreciate a record/streaming is to listen to the program by an (open) studio headphone.
Unfortunately this is not the way the average listener appreciates.
Most people prefer listening in a normal listening room.
There is also another intriguing fact (occasionally reported by John Broskie).
Good tube amplifiers are the best for listening by a studio headphone (provided that no hum is audible).
