Forgot that I was thinking about trying different opt's for this amp, They need to be 8k. Would be curious to hear recommendations besides hamond for a not too expensive unit that would sound good with 6bq5 PP.

heyboer will build z565 clones for around $200.
edcor has some 8k 25watt units around $60 each.
So far it appears to be edcor and hamond that are in my price range.
I just purchased from Mike at Magnequest a pair of 8K Brooklyn B18 pinstripes with M4 upgraded laminations and a center stripe of NI for $325. I am building the chassis now so haven't heard them yet.
what are you building with these?

Hi Steve,
I'm building another variation of the 'EL Cheapo' circuit. This time I will use some National Union 6V6 tubes I recently purchased as the output tubes and Mullard E180F as the phase inverter/driver tubes. I am using some old Stancor amplifier chassis and my external power supply I built for these PP 6P14P and 6V6 amplifiers.
I might have to try building the El Cheapo too, for the Soul Superfly speakers I have.
I think it is an excellent topology. This will be my third iteration. The previous two are using the 6P14P as output tubes and the 5670 and 6N1P as the driver/phase splitters. The first was built on a Scott 299B and the second on a SCA-35 chassis. I built an external 250mA power supply for the Dynaco as the Dynaco power transformer is rated at 180mA and the amp was drawing 200mA with both channels driven to clipping. I will re-use the PS for the E180F/6V6 version. The E180F is triode connected.
I imagine those will be very nice, but they are a bit out of my price range for now.

Will have to look at what he has.
