I have a vintage (it was given to me when I was an apprentice) Amprobe RS3. Since it's a clamp on, no need to fuss over inline instrumentation. Just a thought. BTW the RS3 still is accurate after all these years. I use it generally around house wiring even though I have several much better pieces of test gear.

I have a clamp-on too, but it requires a test jig to use. If you clamp it over the entire line cord, the induced flux from AC flowing opposite directions cancels, and the meter reads zero. It's great for house wiring, not so much for audio gear.

I understand and I suppose I wasn't definitive in my meaning. You showed us how you built an ammeter into your variac, very nice. Since the variac is on the power side it would work nicely clamped around the supply wire to the variac. For me a cheap if ineloquent solution seeing how infrequently I use the variac.
