How much to spend on said amps? for custom stuff the sky is the limit as far as tube choices. why bother with a 300b-oid when you could do 211, 845, 849, Eimac 250TL, 304TL, WE 212, etc... All are better or at least more interesting choices IMNSHO. And availability is not an insurmountable issue with those old NOS valves for the most part.
Follow Ups:
Especially with electrostatic speakers like you and I own Ed.I have a friend running a push pull pair of cx50s on a pair of ML Requests biamped crossed over 240cps.He got a whole bunch of cx50s and a pair of tango transformers from his grampa who got them for free..Thats a deal and a half.
Fun stuff! That does sound like deal and a half! gotta love the unique tube choice too. Electrostatics and tubes are a nice match in many cases I think.
The gentleman who makes my transformers etc has said he'll wind the OT's to use 28 interleaved layers. He said that good quality transformer like
Tango or Tamura uses 7 to 9.Incidently, a topology that has been suggested is to use a input transformer phase splitter;
5u4g, cap, choke, cap (300Bpower) then choke,
cap, 20B power.
there lived a man who never tried salt. He's been explained that if you put a little bit of salt into a dish, it gets tastier. The man tried, and found that it was true. In a quest for taste nirvana, he went to the seashore where he purcased a bag of salt. Then he locked himself in his room and put a handful of salt in his mouth.
Interleaving reduces stray inductance of a transformer, but it increases capacitance between primary and ground. A transformer with that ridiculous degree of interleaving may badly roll high frequencies.
I was actually just trying to count the internal (or external) solder connections to wire up a such a beast.I really liked your story and it clearly points out that something exists beyond the point of diminishing returns and it often isn't pretty.
and thus he added this good stuff to every good dish he made, and then opened many call centers and realized he could do it again and again just like the good stuff he added to transformers, so he did,
and then he lived happily ever afterYes,
may the great nirvana of the union of learning and no further learning be upon you.

Any reason to back that up other than salt? :)
I'm not familiar with the others.. so thankyou for your reply. Budget is not an issue, EML 520B's arn't cheap at about US$500 each. This is an 18month project and other than my radiogram project, the last big amplifier change I'll make for a long time(my current amps I've had for 12 years).I am aware of my biases, and I do like the rose tinted view of the world.. Im not really interested in neutral. How the valve looks is also important, I do like old world charm :)
Daniel.
PS. Could you give a brief one liner on the other valves you suggested? I've never heard of them.
well, I wouldn't say they are brutal sounding. They can be downright lush if you want. the tube is but one piece in a much larger puzzle as far as overall sound quality. If you like how valves look, everything mentioned will look WAY better than a 520B, in my opinion. I too like good looking tubes, and won't bother building with stuff I think is ugly (GM70 as an example). the Eimac and WE stuff is extremely elegant, some of the best and most interestingly made works of art in the tube world. I find the older the better as far as tube elegance from a visual standpoint goes. transmitting tubes almost always look more interesting/better/unique than any 'recieving' tube, also.basically those I mentioned are transmitting tubes, with power outputs in SET mode of 20W or greater (double or more for PP). Most have thoriated tungsten filaments (nice and bright). Images can be found here on AA or on google images most likely. All mentioned should be feasible for class A1 SET operation or PP audio operation.
