Hey all !
I recently found some 97db lothx speakers on ebay, so I snapped them up pretty quick. However, I don't have an amp yet (was planning to do that before these speakers showed up), so would love some advice.
I've been planning to buy a SET kit, and am currently torn between a 1W 45 amp, or 8W 300b amp. My preference is for the 45 (am thinking the Welborne drd45), but am not sure if 1W is enough for 97 db ...I listen to classical AND rock music, and my "listening" room, is relatively small ...
Follow Ups:
One thing about a 300B based amp is it will give you a few more options for playing with speakers. 45s were my favorites until the mesh plate 300Bs came along. If I were just getting into the hobby, I'd start with the 300B mesh plates.Just my take.
I'm starting to lean that way too :)I guess what's becoming apparent in the world of SET's, is that there are a LOT more options/variations on the most simple of designs, starting from the circuit, all the way up to which poewr tube to use (there's HEAPS !!!) !
Paul Joppa's 102 dB. rule tells the tale. In an "average" room, an amp/speaker combo should be capable of 102 dB. SPL peaks at a 1 M. distance. A 2A3 based amp is the min. for use with 97 dB. efficient speakers. If you're not fanatic about DHT, triode wired EL34s would be "perfect". The sound of the amp can be tweaked by switching g3 between cathode and plate.

I am not familar with the exact speakers you have coming , but if you like a 45 & want to rock that amp later just augment with a hybrid di-pole bass sytem down the road, it will keep up & be seemless..just highpass the 45,, & rock.......
Thanks for all the replies :)It still seems a hard decision. A 300b amp will definitely kick some serious butt with these speakers (I beleive they are an easy 8 ohm load, they are the Ambience model, BTW), but I really have my heart set on a 45 amp (I beleive the drd45 are about 1.5W).
A final purchase is still a short way off, so I may wind up tossing a coin at that point :)
-unless you really don't listen very loud at all. In addition to my Atma-Sphere stuff, I have a Moth 2A3 that a friend gave me- NO WAY is it enough power but its pleasant enough otherwise. My room is 17'x 24'x 9'
the Loth-x units drop much below 5-6 ohms somewhere in the repro-
duction range, and/or there is a large reactance associated with
some crossover network. An efficient speaker with an honest 97dB
Watt/Meter sensitivity should play nicely with a watt or two IMO.Good luck,
Hi.My recent project for an audio guy: a cheapie 2x1W IDHT power amp handles gracefully a pair of Westlake BBSM-6 monitors (rated for 91dB/W) with vocals, light pops & classicals in a small living room, driven directly by a cheapie DVD player.
But for hard rocks, you may like to build a more powerful amps.
When I was using a pair of Adire HE10.1s (95-96db if I remember correctly), 6-8Ws of 300B SE power really wasn't enough for anything other than simple music. I do have a very large listening room so that definitely had an impact.

Yes about 2 watts for a 45 tube..If those are single driver that will be nice with a 45.I love single driver speakers like my electrostats because you dont have crossover distortion the way im setup. The ones you got may be direct connect also.
At any rate, depending on the kind of music you like, and how loud you like it, 1W with honest 97 dB speakers that are a sympathetic load for your amp may be fine.
all the best,
mrh

in the FAQ from Paul JoppaIn my case, DRD300B => 96dB wideband + supertweeter
