I am having too much fun dinking around with the reel to reel decks this winter.
Fired up this old Tandberg after a long hiatus... actually worked pretty well. It is utterly as-found.
The VU meters on this deck don't respond when playing back a (recorded!) tape... I don't know if this is normal or a pathology; any of youse guyses happen to know?
all the best,

The cassette deck I have from the same period has metering that only works on record. So I suspect yous is similar. The Tandberg with the joystick is a great transport. Do not think for one second it somehow is inferior to those transports loaded with electronic controls and direct drive motors, etc. These mechanical transports just keep trucking. Later transports from the company using electronic controls were not nearly as reliable and in fact a total in the arse much of the time.

hi,
meters will light up when "REC" button is pushed in, and work only as recording level indicators, not for playback level.
take this as an educated guess, could you please try and confirm.

Hey mrh, I had a somewhat later version of a deck like that! Back in the mid-70s, probly 73-74. Full solenoid transport controls though, not a joystick. 3-3/4 and 7-1/2 ips, half-track. Shoulda never sold it! Yours look like maybe late 60s.I don't know what to tell you about the meters, other than it's probably pretty simple. They're just a side chain along the signal path. I doubt the meters are the problem. More likely just a failed component along the way to them. Look for something which handles both channels. You do get sound, don't you?

Haven't tried recording with it yet, though...

do the meters light up?

I'm guessing you have found the OM on line which labels the meters as record level indicators.
A review from 1973 probably dates that machine. Being a Tandberg it should sound great if it is in good shape. Probably could use a look to see if it has the dreaded Frako caps which should be replaced.
