Clearly had a hard life. Did you check the heads? Because it was so heavily used, its headstack COULD have been replaced -- just takes unscrewing three screws and popping the whole thing out -- by a new one, newer than the heads on your good-looking one. Doubtful, given the sad shape it's in, but just maybe ....
Do these have the fourth head for playing 4-track tapes, or do they just handle 2-tracks?
Follow Ups:
I haven't looked closely at the heads... sound quality on PB was good, though. Definitely a hard life -- none of the three reeked of cigarette smoke, though.
Yes it has 1/2 and 1/4 track PB heads(and a little switch under the head cover to chose the PB mode); I think that was standard equipment (and danged handy to have, too).
all the best,
mrh
If the heads will pass the fingernail test, or something close to it, the headstack alone will easily bring $200 or more on eBay. Even if they're worn down to the point of needing a trip to JRF magnetics for a re-lap, they're worth something.
Your headstack is the most popular, though a number of variants also exist -- quarter-track record, full-track, etc. The final version, still being produced in VERY small quantities, comes stock with just three heads -- erase and two-track record and playback.
Happy New Year!
I'm retired... it can take me a week or more to put my slippers on and go downstairs now...
No interest in selling anything.
all the best,
mrh
