I finally received the Revox PR99 MKII back from its restoration project last week. So far I have put in about 15 hours of broken in time by playing and recording with it and as far as I can tell everything is functioning well as it should. Also, the sound is started to open up quite a bit now from where it was earlier in the week, but I still think that the new caps need some more time to fully broken in. However, the most important thing is, I did notice that the overall sound has improved considerably from what it was before the restoration as the wandering soundstage and left and right phasing issues are completely gone as well as the annoying tape hiss noise.Judging from what I’m hearing now, this reel to reel is shaping up to be one of the best that I’ve own so far, if I compared it to some of the reel to reels that I have had in the past such as the Dokorder, Teac, Otari and Revoxes A77 MKII and B77 MKII that I still own, which are hiding in the closet.

Why?...as all you need to do is send it to the tech who restored mine.Seriously though, I bought this unit about 3 years ago for next to nothing as the seller was basically just trying to get rid of it. Without knowing of what I bought and getting into, the first time I had it everything was functioning well and sounded good to boot or so it seemed until I started playing and recording with it. Then the problems started creeping up one by one to the point that I just gave up using it for at least a year or so.
Then finally this year I decided to send it to a tech to give it an once-over to find out what is wrong with it. Well, that was a big mistake because he found out and then some of what was wrong with it. I was thinking about cutting my losses by leaving the unit with him as I wasn’t going to pay another cent on shipping it back to me.
Anyway to make my story short, after a week of price haggling on the restoration, we finally came to an agreement. I’m glad that I made that decision, because I finally have the opportunity to hear what this unit sounds like when it was new.

Nice machine. One of known excellent sound quality when new so the rebuild seemed to have been needed. If you had named the brands, I would have picked the Revox as the one with the sound quality. Tandberg, hard to get parts and Crown are two that would also be top units sound quality-wise for the home. I'm looking forward to getting a recently acquired Crown fully working (I have just recapped it) so I can do the maintenance on my Tandberg.
Back in the day I wanted a Revox. Ended up with a Tandberg as that is what the store where I worked sold. Happy with it so far...34 years.
The other two reel to reel models that I used to have were Dokorder 8140 and Otari MX 5050 BII.According to the technician that did the work, the Revox PR99 MKII is consist of 99% Studer parts, which surprises me as I always thought that its parts were from Revox. Anyway, I'm very happy with the results of the restoration project.
