Many of you either know Paul Stubblebine or have heard of his mastering skills of many audiophile LP's and CD's. Paul has owned and used Magico speakers within his mastering playback system for several years now. I imagine the extra resolution certainly makes his difficult job much easier.Alon Wolf, President and designer of Magico has built true high end speakers for about 4, maybe 5 years now, sold by word of mouth only. Like many great products, there is no advertising and no compromises.
I just recieved photo info from a friend of their latest speaker design. The photos are definitely worth a look! Please click on the info below:

Brian,Looking at these pictures again, the three pairs of binding posts on the terminal block, and the absence of any crossover in the pictures leads me to the obvious conclusion that these are meant to be tri-amped with an active crossover. Is this correct for all models? Does your pair have a passive crossover?
Regards,
Metralla
Mine has a passive (internal) crossover. The Model 3 does use a 24 tube active crossover, though I haven't seen it. Maybe future photos at the site will include photos of the crossover.
The photos contain very few visual cues to the size of these, but I'd guess 4 ft tall, at least. Which means they're really gonna stand out in most listening rooms! I wouldn't exactly call them ugly, as some others have, but I don't think they'd fit into most people's homes very well! Of course, they may be so expensive that only very rich people, with huge homes and dedicated A./V rooms, can afford them anyway!
I haven't seen this model, personally, however I have seen the Model 1 and 2. The speakers are so fresh that these are the first photos out. I asked and there is no limitation to the color choices, the color in the photos was the color choice for the first buyer of the first Model 3 pair. (Hey, the color isn't my first choice either, but my first color choice may not be yours either). We're all different, thankfully!Yes, Big Dave, these speakers are built for those with dedicated listening rooms. Not that there is anything wrong with that. And, some of us aren't rich and still have dedicated listening rooms, I'll add my name to that profile.
Magico Model 3's aren't going to be inexpensive, you can see that in the photos. Those appear to be the 13 inch Focal W series woofers, which are either $1800 each or $2400 each. (I'd checked at one time). The mid-range is a special handbuilt, there are only a pair or 2 a month made at this time. The tweeter, I'm not sure about, some have suggested that it appears to be the Raven Ribbon. The construction photos show care and engineering that compares to and exceedes the other great speaker manufacturers. The finish is VERY high gloss, better than 99% of the cars on the road. (Certainly better than the finish on any of my newer vehicles).
The Model 1 was good enough that I'd sold my JM Labs Utopias, the model 2 was better, and I can't wait to hear the Model 3. I have heard that they are flat to 22 Hz!!
Like I stated earlier, I can't wait to hear a pair.

Bass looks like Lambda TD or TDX series. If xover points done well, the low mounting will not boom and will deal with limiting floor bounce (reduction/reinforcement of specific frequencies)Hand made midrange is interesting. The pic of the unpainted midrange MDF ring looks like a Audax PR170M series, but the metal film cone is clearly hand made.

Clearly a Raven R2 tweeter.
Overall, depending on the midrange, this could be a very moderate efficiency speaker, easily in the 95db range. Interesting that the sidewalls are made of at least 12 ply birch ply (could be 17 ply). But ply all the same. Not strictly a negative thing, just interesting.
Geez! I ask a simple question, and instead of an answer, I get a windy sales pitch that basically says "I haven't actually heard these speakers, or even seen them in person, but I just KNOW they're the best speakers in the known Universe!" Kinda makes me think you have a vested interest in Magico, Brian! Oh, well, anyone who loves jazz can't be all bad!
Actually, Big Dave, you bring up some insightful observations. No, I haven't heard them. My brother has. I trust my brothers hearing 100%. He is most likely going to purchase the Model 3. I haven't heard them yet, so I will make my decision at that time.Second Sales Pitch? First, I have nothing to gain by any of this. I thought that the benefit of an audiophile bulletin board service was to share pertainent info. Information normally not known to others. Let me, Big Dave, share an example. My family has a friend that is a well repected Doctor who lives in Honolulu. He has purchased a custom built CJ style Jeep that (minus the motor and other obvious components), is made of Stainless steel. Even the brake calipers are made from solid billets of stainless steel. Did you know that there is a facility in Salem, Oregon that produces such vehicles? Tube frame, all stainless steel construction. Custom made wheels, stainless steel construction. Nearly every part is stainless. Do you hear about this in 4 wheeler magazine? How about any other off road or automotive magazine? NO, you won't. They are a specialty shop, making VERY EXPENSIVE custom Jeeps for those who 1) can afford it 2) have the desire or need for a rust free vehicle with 700 horsepower. Do I, or more importantly, should I hate my friend because he can afford it? No. My point, I didn't know that such a vehicle even existed. My friend shared this info with me. While it isn't the vehicle for me, my friend is VERY enthusiastic, very thrilled to own such a vehicle. The same is true with my enthusiasm regarding a new speaker from Magico. I was only trying to share my enthusiasm, my passion with others. Yes, Big Dave, even with you. This is a small production company, known only to those in certain circles. Some higher production comapnies have within their budget and marketing to advertise in the audio magazines. To many in the hobby, the magazines are their only source of information. As stated earlier, you wouldn't know of the Stainless steel jeeps if you only sourced information from magazines. They don't advertise. Perhaps with their limited production and high quality, specialty build, they don't have to? (Word of mouth advertising, once again within certain circles).
Initially it hurt that you, and perhaps others, would feel that I was acting as though I had financial gain by sharing my enthusiasm. Folks get into this hobby out of passion. Tell me one guy that can't get into a 5 minute story about his first exposure to decent audio, or the first system purchased? I'm sure that many of us find them as pleasant stories to tell. Or, tell me a guy that doesn't have trouble sleeping the night before a new component makes it way into their listening room. (I know that I do).
I'm happy to hear that we share a passion for Jazz, maybe you aren't all that bad either. I'll try hard to tame myself down.
Peace,
Brian
Brian,Don't be concerned from what one person thinks...and I know you're really not that concerned, but I want you to know that I enjoyed reading about your experience...and I'm sure many others have too! So keep writing what ever you feel like writing...take care:)

I purposely didn't mention the company name of the assembler/manufacturer of the custom stainless steel CJ series Jeep for a reason. (I didn't want to advertise for the company!) Lord knows what some may say!For the record, I do not have a vested interest in either the stainless steel manufacturing business, or custom made vehicles. Record cleaning products, well, that's another story!
...what's the speaker like?Maybe David S. has good 12s bandwidth, but there is no benefit to a 700k image with those small dimensions on the web. For a lot of people there is a significant cost in dl time. I visit a great number of pages; why waste my time _unnecessarily_. Hint: put a link on the site for hi res images for those who really want to download them for uses other than simple on screen viewing. This is rudimentary and common.
BTW, I don't like the looks, either.

Hey BrianHow do they sound?
What do the stands look like?
They look to be very thoughtfully designed, built and especially, finished, but I would like to know how they sound. Looks mean nothing if they don't sound good.
What does the ring do?
What does the x-o look like?
Why do they remind me of Thorsten's Magnificats? Why take a nice fullrange driver like the Supravox and add all those other things? Why not just build with that alone, and work things out that way? Well I guess you could add a super tweeter...
Interesting speaker though
Thanks
D

Just my guess, you have never heard them? And I guess that your WAF affects your purchases?
are ugly and probably sound like junk. Who puts a woofer on the floor these days? Can you say BOOM!!
You haven't heard them, how would you know? I think Avantgaurd sound terrible as well as Dunlavy. Talk about Sophmoric.
> > Unlike BOOMY Dulavy? You haven't heard them, how would you know? I think Avantgaurd sound terrible as well as Dunlavy. Talk about Sophmoric."You can't spell Dunlavy. You can't spell Avantgarde. You can't spell sophomoric. Permit me to ask you this: can you spell "I-D-I-O-T?" Perhaps that wasn't fair, as I just spelled it for you.
Next time you even think about posting, understand this: you can't think at all. It's a realization that may well stop you from embarrassing yourself further.
Cheers.
Nigel
Perhaps! So I made a few spelling errors. This sometimes happens, especially when I mention product lines that I have little or no respect for. Your insults still doesn't excuse the one note bass that I've heard on every Dunlavy that I've ever heard. (It actually reminds me of the teenagers cars that I hear in the bad neighborhoods). I'm assuming that this is what made you so mad that you had to show your true colors. Dunlavys have a fequency range that they like very well, and it is no big secret, Nigel. Most professionals know that!
Don't you just love whining punks?
I was just wondering...why would you insult someone for 1.making some simple spelling errors (this is not an English class) and 2.simply stating an opinion? It is true; it is impossible to know how a speaker sounds without actually hearing it. It just makes me sick to my stomach when I see other people being so cruel to others for no apparent reason. I mean, for example, there are people that die every day by the hand of people who like to murder others. Why don't you go chew out someone who enjoys killing people? Or maybe, take out your anger by hitting the crap out of a punching bag. Or, you can go find that bully who teased you all throughout high school and insult him/her? Try not to be so cruel to people and you may discover that you will be treated the same as how you treat others. Have a wonderful rest of the day and enjoy your life to its fullest:)
I agree entirely! What does nigels insults have to do with the speakers that are being discussed? I see a (P) after nigels name, I'm assuming that this is his way of saying that he is an industry professional, though in 35 active years in the hobby, I have NO idea who he is.I will say that nigel, equipped with spell check and Roget's Thesaurus, proved that he is either having a bad day or was absent during the manners/politeness portion of his finishing school. It seems apparent that he missed salemanship day as well, since he is boldly attacking Steve. Even though we have no idea what nigel is "professionally" involved with, I feel that he has somehow his affected his sales ...
Good day to you sir!
Who is this Nigel character, indeed. Some say he's the ghost of a dead and long abused high end audio salesman who was asked one to many times if the Dunlavys he was about to demo to an insufferable newbie were as good as Bose.
Others say he's the spirit of criticism in all of us. The alter ego who can say what we all really feel inside but don't due to the pressures of circumstance and decorum.
And at least a few think he's one of the few folks who gets it and simply doesnt tolerate stupidity and says what he thinks no matter what.
Me? I think he's just an obnoxious Brit with a sharp tongue who occaisionally pens humorous and inciteful reviews of Legacy Audio products.

Maybe we all could benefit from a little more tolerance here. Since my native language isnīt english Iīm likely to to make misstakes and I not very likely to do better with comments like yours.
In most cases its good to take a few breaths BEFORE answering so that you donīt post things "in the heat of the moment". Also we donīt like people calling others "names". Polite and respectful will get you longer.cheers

...an informative and helpful post. Not only did you take time out from your busy day to correct the unfortunate fellows egregious spelling errors, you generously offered him some very insightful personal advice on avoiding further faux pas. Bravo sir.
I'd like to know more about those speakers. The finish is simply marvelous - looks like a Raven tweeter. There's a disturbing image at the link below (which may be copyrighted) but the real reason I'm not putting it on this page is because you may be having breakfast.

I haven't heard the Model 3 yet, however, my brother Paul of Tube Research Labs is down in the Bay Area to look at them and maybe place an order. He currently has the Model 2, the same style and Model that famous Recording Engineer/Mastering Engineer Paul Stubblebine has.The Model 2's are very good, good enough that others have sold their JM Labs Utiopias, thier Avalons, their Wilsons and their Sound Labs once they've heard them and purchased them. Results will vary, of course. That said, I'd suggest that if you are in the market for speakers in this price range, the Magico may be worth looking into and hearing.
I've been told that they are flat to 22 Hz! Now that's low! I plan on taking a trip to hear the Magico soon, and will let you know the results at that time.
Are the photos worth the wait? They all loaded in parallel rather than one at a time? Feh.

Maybe you should upgrade from that 2400 baud modem?
Instant Oatmeal, Pre-packaged and/or fast food, 5 year old Scotch. For some, items of pleasure are worth a small delay.
Via the dial-up modem in my weekend house, I gave up with one 1/4 of 2 of the pix visible after 30 seconds. (BTW, the whole thing took about 10secs back here in NYC.) Yeah, I could have a faster connection (but not at a house we use a few days a month) but the website could also configure the downloads better.
