This may not be directly a speaker question but "very close"One person here on AudioAsylum.com wrote in a review of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro that the Beyerdynamic DT 990 is better than the Sennheiser 580.
Since I live in Spain at this moment I have no way of auditioning a Sennheiser, but I was interested in a Sennheiser 600 before.
However, if the old Beyerdynamic is really that good than I can save my hard earned cash for some more software.
Any input on this?

I justed to own the DT990's and they are extremely good 'phones but did not compare with either the Grados or the HD580. Grados were more musical but not as comfortable. The HD580 was more accurate then both and very, very comfortable--comfortable enough to fall asleep while wearing them. I would recommend going with the HD580 or HD600, although I'm stuck on the Grados.
This is an interesting one. I own the HD-600s and also the DT-770pro (the closed back version of the DT990pro, same drivers). The HD 600s cost nearly twice what the DT770s. Both are excellent headphones, but there is no doubt in my mind that the HD-600s sound better with an expensive CD player and dedicated headphone amplifier. They simply sound more spacious. If you are not using a dedicated headphone amplifier then this is a more even playing field which can often leave the HD-600s sounding a little flat and lifeless where the Beyers never do, they always sparkle. The DT770 have a very very appealing sound that draws you in and makes you want to listen for hours. I also have the DT660mk2 (the DT770's forerunner), which is probably my favourite dynamic headphone of all time. Both of these just ooze sound with a certain "Je ne c'est quoi!", and I KNOW that the DT990s are the same.
I must point out as well, because the DT770 is closed back I tend to listen to them more (not disturbing other people). Also bear in mind that the DT770s work better with a walkman or off the headphone socket of a tape deck or CD player, I would assume the DT990 is the same.
I hope this helps

I really like my DT-990 for their lack of "inside the head" effect. For a large number of opinions see the included link.

Thanks for the link. It has a wealth of information. It was very interesting to read the different opinions of the different people about the Beyerdynamic DT 990. Some thought it was a pretty decent headphone, others thought it was can not keep up with todays headphones. I also hear the strong bass and the somewhat over pronounced highs (when played louder).I don’t listen often enough with headphones to justify a new purchase of better cans. Does anyone know a tweak to fix the frequency response on those cans? Mine are the old 600 ohm version cans (actually I measures 570 ohms) I use the speaker output on my Conrad Johnson CAV 50 to drive them and sometimes a German headphone amp – Amity HPA 2, manufactured by an American living in Gemany.
Thanks
I don't know about the Beyerdynamic DT-990, but I personally like the DT-931. (I think the 931 is a later model.) The Sennheiser HD600 is excellent too, but I think the 931 has a tad more resolution and linearity. OTOH, some say the 931 is bright-sounding and prefer the HD600. I think it will come down to taste, as well as the upstream equipment. I think trying out these headphones in your own environment will be far more valuable than an opinion sample.
