In Reply to: What speakers are a good match with byston gear? posted by Tom M on October 23, 2001 at 21:56:49:
I'm using Vandersteen Model 3s with my Bryston gear. Previously, I had a pair of Energy C8s and the sound was a little too harsh for my ears. It's not that the Brystons are particularly bright. I just find that many mid-priced speakers are a designed to excite potential buyers by emphasizing the frequency extremes. After you've lived with them you recognize the flaws.I think you'd have to narrow down your choices of Paradigm and B&W speakers to specific models that sound good with Bryston. For instance, the Paradigm Studio series would likely sound good because they've dealt with some of the upper frequency brightness found in the Monitor and lower series. I haven't tried B&W in my system, but suspect that things would get a little fatigueing. Most of the reading I've done lately suggests that the priceier B&Ws major on crisp highs and detailed presentation. This might be too much of good thing with Bryson gear, but it depends what you're looking for.
If you're going to go with the Bryston/Paradigm or B&W combo, then you might want to try the tube pre-amp route.

Follow Ups:
Apologies for that last, rambling, generalization-filled post. When I was looking for speakers last year to go with my 4BST/BP25P/Rotel 991/Project 6.1 combo, I narrowed it down to three finalists within my price range that I had access to. You didn't mention your budget or space considerations so I don't know if this will be of any use to you.I auditioned the Paradigm Studio 100 v.2, the PSB Stratus Goldi and the Dynaudio Audience 70 (likely 72s now). I think I could have happily lived with any of these speakers. In the midst of my decision-making process, I had the opportunity to bring my Brystons to a fellow's house and try them with a pair of used Vandersteen 3s. I liked what I heard and bought them.
