Earlier today, I decided to clean out my laundry/storage room area, where I have been storing an older pair of mint condition black on black Polk Monitor 10B's for years. This is the speaker that got me into high end audio back in 1986 when I just got out of college. Back in the early 90's when I replaced them with Maggies (I fell in love with the planar sound), I decided to store them. I just couldn't sell them, since they sounded very expensive and great in many respects, and I had saved long and hard for my first 'real' system (remember, many college grads incur huge debts!) which included these classic Polk's. I fired them up today and connected them to my McIntosh tube equipment, and they sounded spectacular!!! I couldn't believe it!!! I can't quite put a handle on their sound signature, but they were, and still are, excellent speakers. I do believe Polk made much better speakers back then (1980's) BEFORE they went ultra-commercial. Has anyone else owned or heard the Monitor 10B's? What do you think of them?
Follow Ups:
I sure do remember them! I had my Dad buy a pair after an extensive audition at a local dealer. I went for the gusto -- I bought the RTA 12's. Those were the ones with tweeter set open on the top in a "Real Time Array." Oh man, was I ever in audio heaven with those bad boys. I don't think I have experienced that kind of thrill since -- I was practically giddy when I brought them home.Regards,
Stu
I spoke to Polk's rep at the Montreal Hi-Fi Show yesterday and I was telling him how HT-oriented Polk had become. Of course 5 speakers is better than 2 especially when you're a speaker manufacturer :-)I liked my 10B's very much back then. They still sound very nice.
Unfortunately, unlike the 10B, I hardly ever see these come up used. The original line I thought used higher quality crossover parts. The later models sound a little congested by comparison.
Yup... I have a pair of 7A's on my SS secondary system (with the TV) as well... Good sounding speakers; not quite efficient enough for my SET amps, though.all the best,
mrhps. I have an early Polk LF14 subwoofer in the basement too, but that's another story.
I can't believe it! I also owned the Polk 10B's. Bought them while I was in college from an Audio Shop in Manhasset, NY. That was my entry into high end as well. I had a Sansui AU9900 and a TU-9900 tuner then a Sansui AU20000 integrated amp driving the Polks with a direct drive Pioneer 510 turntable with a Micro Acoustics 282 cartridge! The system blew away by brothers Bose 901's with the Pioneer SX1010 receiver! I gave the Polks to my brother in law and they were stolen from him. Fond memories................
Don't know if there still there, but I think so.
I haven't stopped in there in years.

That was kick ass equipment then....and still sounds great now.Look at vintage...and refresh some memories.....
Cool...
I had them. What stood out to me was the midbass warmth and sweet rolled off highs. I liked them. I remember they really sounded great with my Alan Parsons I Robot album!Mike
Playing it right now.(some other place some other time...)
Damn the bass trombones and cellos sound great!
what's really weird is I was listening to the album last night and was thinking about how the album sounded on the little Polks....My favorite Alan Parsons is Tales of Mystery and Imagination.. it's really trippy! (and recorded wonderfully)
Mike
PS -- I need to get you a check! I'll mail it tomorrow..
Thanks for the post. I lived with the 10Bs for ten years and it took me 7 years to find a speaker I like as much or better. A real value and I enjoyed every minute spent with them. I owned the 7s and spent time with the 12s - the 10Bs in my opinion were the best of the bunch and the speaker that really peaked my interest in hifi. The reviews in Audio Review make it clear that others feel the same way.
Yes I have!...using the Audax tweeters...good stuff then.I am sure they are doing some good things now as well....at least Matthew is trying.
Your post would have been excellent in the Vintage setion of the asylum as well!
I owned a pair of the 12B's and I believe Polk used Peerless 810665 tweeters in all of their original speakers.
See...I got mixed up.....it was this one for sure.Remember Rich Acoustics? Ring a bell?
that tweeter is STILL available from madisound.now that is STAYING power!.....REM
